Matthew 21:4–5 — English Standard Version (ESV)

This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,

“Say to the daughter of Zion,

‘Behold, your king is coming to you,

humble, and mounted on a donkey,

on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”

Matthew 21:4–5 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.

Matthew 21:4–5 — New Living Translation (NLT)

This took place to fulfill the prophecy that said,

“Tell the people of Jerusalem,

‘Look, your King is coming to you.

He is humble, riding on a donkey—

riding on a donkey’s colt.’ ”

Matthew 21:4–5 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:

“Tell the daughter of Zion,

‘Behold, your King is coming to you,

Lowly, and sitting on a donkey,

A colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ”

Matthew 21:4–5 — New Century Version (NCV)

This was to bring about what the prophet had said:

“Tell the people of Jerusalem,

‘Your king is coming to you.

He is gentle and riding on a donkey,

on the colt of a donkey.’ ”

Matthew 21:4–5 — American Standard Version (ASV)

Now this is come to pass, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, Tell ye the daughter of Zion,

Behold, thy King cometh unto thee,

Meek, and riding upon an ass,

And upon a colt the foal of an ass.

Matthew 21:4–5 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

But all this came to pass, that that might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold thy King cometh to thee, meek, and mounted upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

Matthew 21:4–5 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

This happened so that what the prophet had said came true:

“Tell the people of Zion,

‘Your king is coming to you.

He’s gentle,

riding on a donkey,

on a colt, a young pack animal.’ ”

Matthew 21:4–5 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

This took place so that what was spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled:

Tell Daughter Zion,

“Look, your King is coming to you,

gentle, and mounted on a donkey,

even on a colt,

the foal of a beast of burden.”

Matthew 21:4–5 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)

This took place to fulfill what had been spoken through the prophet, saying,

“Tell the daughter of Zion,

Look, your king is coming to you,

humble, and mounted on a donkey,

and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

Matthew 21:4–5 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

Now this took place so that what was spoken through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying,

“Say to the daughter of Zion,

‘Behold, your king is coming to you,

humble and mounted on a donkey,

and on a colt, the foal of a pack animal.’ ”

Matthew 21:4–5 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

This took place so that what was spoken through the prophet would come true. It says,

“Say to the city of Zion,

‘See, your king comes to you.

He is gentle and riding on a donkey.

He is riding on a donkey’s colt.’ ”

Matthew 21:4–5 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

Say to the daughter of Zion,

Behold your King is coming to you,

Gentle, and mounted on a donkey,

Even on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”
