3:7I thought,22 ‘Certainly you will respect23 me!
Now you will accept correction!’
If she had done so, her home24 would not be destroyed25
by all the punishments I have threatened.26
But they eagerly sinned
in everything they did.27
Footnotes
- 22 Heb “said.”
- 23 Or “fear.” The second person verb form (“you will respect”) is feminine singular, indicating that personified Jerusalem is addressed. God’s judgment of the nations (v. 6) was an object lesson for Israel’s benefit.
- 24 Or “dwelling place.”
- 25 Heb “cut off.”
- 26 Heb “all which I have punished her.” The precise meaning of this statement and its relationship to what precedes are unclear.
- 27 Heb “But they got up early, they made corrupt all their actions.” The phrase “they got up early” probably refers to their eagerness to engage in sinful activities.

Of Jerusalem I thought,
‘Surely you will fear me
and accept correction!’
Then her place of refuge would not be destroyed,
nor all my punishments come upon her.
But they were still eager
to act corruptly in all they did.

I said: You will certainly fear me

Then her dwelling place
would not be cut off
based on all that I had allocated to her.
However, they became more corrupt
in all their actions.

I thought, ‘Surely they will have reverence for me now!
Surely they will listen to my warnings.
Then I won’t need to strike again,
destroying their homes.’
But no, they get up early
to continue their evil deeds.

I have said, ‘Surely she will fear me;
she will accept discipline.
Then her dwelling place will not be cut down,
nor all that I have brought upon her.’
Surely they rise early;
they make all their deeds corrupt.

I said, Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive instruction;
So their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them:
But they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.
