The Coming of the True King
9:1An oracle of the word of the Lord concerning the land of Hadrach,1 with its focus on Damascus:2
The eyes of all humanity,3 especially of the tribes of Israel, are toward the Lord, 9:2as are those of Hamath also, which adjoins Damascus, and Tyre4 and Sidon,5 though they consider themselves to be very wise. 9:3Tyre built herself a fortification and piled up silver like dust and gold like the mud of the streets! 9:4Nevertheless the Lord will evict her and shove her fortifications6 into the sea—she will be consumed by fire.
Footnotes
- 1 The land of Hadrach was a northern region stretching from Aleppo in the north to Damascus in the south (cf. “Aram”).
- 2 Heb “Damascus its resting place.” The 3rd person masculine singular suffix on “resting place” (מְנֻחָתוֹ, ménukhato), however, precludes “land” or even “Hadrach,” both of which are feminine, from being the antecedent. Most likely “word” (masculine) is the antecedent, i.e., the “word of the Lord” is finding its resting place, that is, its focus in or on Damascus.
- 3 Though without manuscript and version support, many scholars suggest emendation here to clarify what, to them, is an unintelligible reading. Thus some propose עָדֵי אָרָם (’ade ’aram, “cities of Aram”; cf. , ) for עֵין אָדָם (’en ’adam, “eye of man”) or אֲדָמָה (’adamah, “ground”) for אָדָם (’adam, “man”), “(surface of) the earth.” It seems best, however, to see “eye” as collective and to understand the passage as saying that the attention of the whole earth will be upon the Lord (cf. , ).

- 6 The Hebrew word חַיִל (khayil, “strength, wealth”) can, with certain suffixes, look exactly like חֵל (khel, “fortress, rampart”). The chiastic pattern here suggests that not Tyre’s riches but her defenses will be cast into the sea. Thus the present translation renders the term “fortifications” (so also ) rather than “wealth” (, , ) or “power” (, ).

ESVEnglish Standard Version
The oracle of the word of the Lord is against the land of Hadrach
and Damascus is its resting place.
For the Lord has an eye on mankind
and on all the tribes of Israel,
and on Hamath also, which borders on it,
Tyre and Sidon, though they are very wise.
Tyre has built herself a rampart
and heaped up silver like dust,
and fine gold like the mud of the streets.
But behold, the Lord will strip her of her possessions
and strike down her power on the sea,
and she shall be devoured by fire.

A prophecy:
The word of the Lord is against the land of Hadrak
and will come to rest on Damascus—
for the eyes of all people and all the tribes of Israel
are on the Lord—
and on Hamath too, which borders on it,
and on Tyre and Sidon, though they are very skillful.
Tyre has built herself a stronghold;
she has heaped up silver like dust,
and gold like the dirt of the streets.
But the Lord will take away her possessions
and destroy her power on the sea,
and she will be consumed by fire.

A pronouncement:
The word of the Lord
is against the land of Hadrach,
and Damascus is its resting place—
for the eyes of humanity
and all the tribes of Israel
are on the Lord—
and also against Hamath, which borders it,
as well as Tyre and Sidon,
though they are very shrewd.
Tyre has built herself a fortress;
she has heaped up silver like dust
and gold like the dirt of the streets.
Listen! The Lord will impoverish her
and cast her wealth into the sea;
she herself will be consumed by fire.

NLTNew Living Translation
This is the message from the Lord against the land of Aram and the city of Damascus, for the eyes of humanity, including all the tribes of Israel, are on the Lord.
Doom is certain for Hamath,
near Damascus,
and for the cities of Tyre and Sidon,
though they are so clever.
Tyre has built a strong fortress
and has made silver and gold
as plentiful as dust in the streets!
But now the Lord will strip away Tyre’s possessions
and hurl its fortifications into the sea,
and it will be burned to the ground.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible
An oracle. The word of Yahweh is against the land of Hadrach,
and Damascus is its resting place.
For to Yahweh belongs the eye of humankind,
and all the tribes of Israel,
and also Hamath, which borders on it;
Tyre and Sidon—yes, they are very wise!
Tyre has built a fortification for itself,
and it heaped up silver like dust,
and gold like the mud of the streets.
Look! The Lord will drive it out
and will hurl its outer ramparts into the sea,
and it will be consumed by fire.

KJV 1900King James Version
The burden of the word of the Lord in the land of Hadrach,
And Damascus shall be the rest thereof:
When the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel, shall be toward the Lord.
And Hamath also shall border thereby;
Tyrus, and Zidon, though it be very wise.
And Tyrus did build herself a strong hold,
And heaped up silver as the dust,
And fine gold as the mire of the streets.
Behold, the Lord will cast her out,
And he will smite her power in the sea;
And she shall be devoured with fire.
