Then the name of Israel will be remembered no more.”
83:5Yes,7 they devise a unified strategy;8
they form an alliance9 against you.
83:6It includes10 the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,
Moab and the Hagrites,11
83:7Gebal,12 Ammon, and Amalek,
Philistia and the inhabitants of Tyre.13
83:8Even Assyria has allied with them,
lending its strength to the descendants of Lot.14
(Selah)
83:9Do to them as you did to Midian15—
as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River!16
83:10They were destroyed at Endor;17
their corpses were like manure18 on the ground.
83:11Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb,19
and all their rulers like Zebah and Zalmunna,20
Footnotes
- 6 Heb “we will cause them to disappear from [being] a nation.”
- 7 Or “for.”
- 8 Heb “they consult [with] a heart together.”
- 9 Heb “cut a covenant.”
- 10 The words “it includes” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.
- 11 The Hagrites are also mentioned in 1 Chr 5:10, 19–20.
- 12 Some identify Gebal with the Phoenician coastal city of Byblos (see Ezek 27:9, where the name is spelled differently), though others locate this site south of the Dead Sea (see 148 גְּבַל; גְּבַל).
- 13 For location see ; ; ; ; .
- 14 Heb “they are an arm for the sons of Lot.” The “arm” is here a symbol of military might. The descendants of Lot were the Moabites and Ammonites.
- 15 Heb “do to them like Midian.”
- 16 The psalmist alludes here to Gideon’s victory over the Midianites (see Judg 7–8) and to Barak’s victory over Jabin’s army, which was led by his general Sisera (Judg 4–5).
- 17 Endor is not mentioned in the accounts of Gideon’s or Barak’s victories, but both battles took place in the general vicinity of the town. (See Y. Aharoni and M. Avi-Yonah, The Macmillan Bible Atlas, 46, 54.) Because Sisera and Jabin are mentioned in v. 9b, many understand them to be the subject of the verbs in v. 10, though they relate v. 10 to Gideon’s victory, which is referred to in v. 9a, 11. (See, for example, Y. Aharoni, The Land of the Bible, 263.)
- 18 Heb “they were manure.” In addition to this passage, corpses are compared to manure in 2 Kgs 9:37; Jer 8:2; 9:21; 16:4; 25:33.
- 19 Oreb and Zeeb were the generals of the Midianite army that was defeated by Gideon. The Ephraimites captured and executed both of them and sent their heads to Gideon (Judg 7:24–25).
- 20 Zebah and Zalmunna were the Midianite kings. Gideon captured them and executed them (Judg 8:1–21).
- 21 The translation assumes that “Zebah and Zalmunna” are the antecedents of the relative pronoun (“who [said]”). Another option is to take “their nobles … all their rulers” as the antecedent and to translate, “those who say.”
- 22 Heb “let’s take possession for ourselves.”

They say, “Come, let us wipe them out as a nation;
let the name of Israel be remembered no more!”
For they conspire with one accord;
against you they make a covenant—
the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,
Moab and the Hagrites,
Gebal and Ammon and Amalek,
Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;
Asshur also has joined them;
they are the strong arm of the children of Lot. Selah
Do to them as you did to Midian,
as to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon,
who were destroyed at En-dor,
who became dung for the ground.
Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb,

who said, “Let us take possession for ourselves

“Come,” they say, “let us destroy them as a nation,
so that Israel’s name is remembered no more.”
With one mind they plot together;
they form an alliance against you—
the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,
of Moab and the Hagrites,
Byblos, Ammon and Amalek,
Philistia, with the people of Tyre.
Even Assyria has joined them
to reinforce Lot’s descendants.
Do to them as you did to Midian,
as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the river Kishon,
who perished at Endor
and became like dung on the ground.
Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb,

who said, “Let us take possession

“Come,” they say, “let us wipe out Israel as a nation.
We will destroy the very memory of its existence.”
Yes, this was their unanimous decision.
They signed a treaty as allies against you—
these Edomites and Ishmaelites;
Moabites and Hagrites;
Gebalites, Ammonites, and Amalekites;
and people from Philistia and Tyre.
Assyria has joined them, too,
and is allied with the descendants of Lot.
Interlude
Do to them as you did to the Midianites
and as you did to Sisera and Jabin at the Kishon River.
They were destroyed at Endor,
and their decaying corpses fertilized the soil.
Let their mighty nobles die as Oreb and Zeeb did.
Let all their princes die like Zebah and Zalmunna,
for they said, “Let us seize for our own use
these pasturelands of God!”

They say, “Come, let us annihilate them from being a nation,
so that the name of Israel will be remembered no more.”
For they have consulted together with a unified purpose.
They have made a covenant against you:
the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites,
Moab and the Hagrites,
Gebal and Ammon and Amalek,
Philistia, with the inhabitants of Tyre.
Assyria also has joined with them.
They provide help to the children of Lot. Selah
Do to them as you did with Midian,
as with Sisera, as with Jabin at the wadi of Kishon.
They were destroyed at En-dor;
they became dung for the ground.
Make their leaders like Oreb and Zeeb,
and all their chiefs like Zebah and Zalmunna,
who said, “Let us take as our possession
the pastures of God.”

KJV 1900King James Version
They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation;
That the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.
For they have consulted together with one consent:
They are confederate against thee:
The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites;
Of Moab, and the Hagarenes;
Gebal, and Ammon, and Amalek;
The Philistines with the inhabitants of Tyre;
Assur also is joined with them:
They have holpen the children of Lot. Selah.
Do unto them as unto the Midianites;
As to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the brook of Kison:
Which perished at En-dor:
They became as dung for the earth.
Make their nobles like Oreb, and like Zeeb:
Yea, all their princes as Zebah, and as Zalmunna:
Who said, Let us take to ourselves
The houses of God in possession.
