33:16No king is delivered by his vast army;
a warrior is not saved by his great might.
33:17A horse disappoints those who trust in it for victory;24
despite its great strength, it cannot deliver.
33:18Look, the Lord takes notice of his loyal followers,25
those who wait for him to demonstrate his faithfulness26
33:19by saving their lives from death27
and sustaining them during times of famine.28
33:20We29 wait for the Lord;
he is our deliverer30 and shield.31
33:21For our hearts rejoice in him,
for we trust in his holy name.
33:22May we experience your faithfulness, O Lord,32
for33 we wait for you.
Footnotes
- 24 Heb “a lie [is] the horse for victory.”
- 25 Heb “look, the eye of the Lord [is] toward the ones who fear him.” The expression “the eye … [is] toward” here indicates recognition and the bestowing of favor. See Ps 34:15. The one who fears the Lord respects his sovereignty and obeys his commandments. See Ps 128:1; Prov 14:2.
- 26 Heb “for the ones who wait for his faithfulness.”
- 27 Heb “to save from death their live[s].”
- 28 Heb “and to keep them alive in famine.”
- 29 Or “our lives.” The suffixed form of נֶפֶשׁ (nefesh, “being, life”) is often equivalent to a pronoun in poetic texts.
- 30 Or “[source of] help.”
- 31 Or “protector.”
- 32 Heb “let your faithfulness, O Lord, be on us.”
- 33 Or “just as.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version
The king is not saved by his great army;
a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
and by its great might it cannot rescue.
Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him,
on those who hope in his steadfast love,
that he may deliver their soul from death
and keep them alive in famine.
Our soul waits for the Lord;
he is our help and our shield.
For our heart is glad in him,
because we trust in his holy name.
Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us,
even as we hope in you.

NIVNew International Version (2011)
No king is saved by the size of his army;
no warrior escapes by his great strength.
A horse is a vain hope for deliverance;
despite all its great strength it cannot save.
But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him,
on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,
to deliver them from death
and keep them alive in famine.
We wait in hope for the Lord;
he is our help and our shield.
In him our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in his holy name.
May your unfailing love be with us, Lord,
even as we put our hope in you.

CSBChristian Standard Bible
A king is not saved by a large army;
a warrior will not be rescued by great strength.
The horse is a false hope for safety;
it provides no escape by its great power.
But look, the Lord keeps his eye on those who fear him—
those who depend on his faithful love
to rescue them from death
and to keep them alive in famine.
We wait for the Lord;
he is our help and shield.
For our hearts rejoice in him
because we trust in his holy name.
May your faithful love rest on us, Lord,
for we put our hope in you.

NLTNew Living Translation
The best-equipped army cannot save a king,
nor is great strength enough to save a warrior.
Don’t count on your warhorse to give you victory—
for all its strength, it cannot save you.
But the Lord watches over those who fear him,
those who rely on his unfailing love.
He rescues them from death
and keeps them alive in times of famine.
We put our hope in the Lord.
He is our help and our shield.
In him our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in his holy name.
Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord,
for our hope is in you alone.

KJV 1900King James Version
There is no king saved by the multitude of an host:
A mighty man is not delivered by much strength.
An horse is a vain thing for safety:
Neither shall he deliver any by his great strength.
Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him,
Upon them that hope in his mercy;
To deliver their soul from death,
And to keep them alive in famine.
Our soul waiteth for the Lord:
He is our help and our shield.
For our heart shall rejoice in him,
Because we have trusted in his holy name.
Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us,
According as we hope in thee.
