19:4Yet its voice6 echoes7 throughout the earth;
its8 words carry9 to the distant horizon.10
In the sky11 he has pitched a tent for the sun.12
19:5Like a bridegroom it emerges13 from its chamber;14
like a strong man it enjoys15 running its course.16
19:6It emerges from the distant horizon,17
and goes from one end of the sky to the other;18
nothing can escape19 its heat.
Footnotes
- 6 The reads, “their measuring line” (קוּם, qum). The noun קַו (qav, “measuring line”) makes no sense in this context. The reading קוֹלָם (qolam, “their voice”) which is supported by the , is preferable.
- 7 Heb “goes out,” or “proceeds forth.”
- 8 Heb “their” (see the note on the word “its” in v. ).
- 9 The verb is supplied in the translation. The Hebrew text has no verb; יָצָא (yatsa’, “goes out”) is understood by ellipsis.
- 10 Heb “to the end of the world.”
- 11 Heb “in them” (i.e., the heavens).
- 12 He has pitched a tent for the sun. The personified sun emerges from this “tent” in order to make its daytime journey across the sky. So the “tent” must refer metaphorically to the place where the sun goes to rest during the night.
- 13 The participle expresses the repeated or regular nature of the action.
- 14 The Hebrew noun חֻפָּה (khufah, “chamber”) occurs elsewhere only in Isa 4:5 and Joel 2:16 (where it refers to the bedroom of a bride and groom). Like a bridegroom. The metaphor likens the sun to a bridegroom who rejoices on his wedding night.
- 15 The imperfect verbal form draws attention to the regularity of the action.
- 16 Heb “[on] a path.” Like a strong man. The metaphorical language reflects the brilliance of the sunrise, which attests to the sun’s vigor.
- 17 Heb “from the end of the heavens [is] its going forth.”
- 18 Heb “and its circuit [is] to their ends.”
- 19 Heb “is hidden from.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version
Their voice goes out through all the earth,
and their words to the end of the world.
In them he has set a tent for the sun,
which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
and its circuit to the end of them,
and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

NIVNew International Version (2011)
Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
It rises at one end of the heavens
and makes its circuit to the other;
nothing is deprived of its warmth.

Their message has gone out to the whole earth,
and their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun.
It is like a bridegroom coming from his home;
it rejoices like an athlete running a course.
It rises from one end of the heavens
and circles to their other end;
nothing is hidden from its heat.

NLTNew Living Translation
Yet their message has gone throughout the earth,
and their words to all the world.
God has made a home in the heavens for the sun.
It bursts forth like a radiant bridegroom after his wedding.
It rejoices like a great athlete eager to run the race.
The sun rises at one end of the heavens
and follows its course to the other end.
Nothing can hide from its heat.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible
Yet in all the world their line goes out,
and their words to the end of the world.
In them he has pitched a tent for the sun,
and it is like a bridegroom
who comes out of his bridal chamber.
It is glad like a strong man
to run its course.
Its rising is from one end of the heavens
and its circuit to the other end of them;
and nothing is hidden from its heat.

KJV 1900King James Version
Their line is gone out through all the earth,
And their words to the end of the world.
In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,
Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
And rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.
His going forth is from the end of the heaven,
And his circuit unto the ends of it:
And there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.
