Footnotes

  1. 1 Heb “all his affliction.” This may refer to David’s strenuous and tireless efforts to make provision for the building of the temple (see 1 Chr 22:14). Some prefer to revocalize the text as עַנַוָתוֹ (’anavato, “his humility”).
  2. 2 Heb “the powerful [one] of Jacob.”
  3. 3 The words “he said” are supplied in the translation to clarify that what follows is David’s vow.
  4. 4 Heb “the tent of my house.”
  5. 5 Heb “go up upon the bed of my couch.”
  6. 6 The plural form of the noun may indicate degree or quality; David envisions a special dwelling place (see Pss 43:3; 46:4; 84:1).
  7. 7 Heb “the powerful [one] of Jacob.”

all his affliction.

How he swore to Yahweh,

I will not go up to the couch of my bed,

I will give no sleep to my eyes,

no slumber to my eyelids,

until I find a place for Yahweh,

a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

KJV 1900King James Version

Lord, Remember David,

And all his afflictions:

How he sware unto the Lord,

And vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob;

Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house,

Nor go up into my bed;

I will not give sleep to mine eyes,

Or slumber to mine eyelids,

Until I find out a place for the Lord,

An habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.
