130:1From the deep water1 I cry out to you, O Lord.
130:2O Lord, listen to me!2
Pay attention to3 my plea for mercy!
130:3If you, O Lord, were to keep track of4 sins,
O Lord, who could stand before you?5
130:4But6 you are willing to forgive,7
so that you might8 be honored.9
130:5I rely on10 the Lord,
I rely on him with my whole being;11
I wait for his assuring word.12
130:6I yearn for the Lord,13
more than watchmen do for the morning,
yes, more than watchmen do for the morning.14
130:7O Israel, hope in the Lord,
for the Lord exhibits loyal love,15
and is more than willing to deliver.16
130:8He will deliver17 Israel
from all the consequences of their sins.18
Footnotes
- 1 Heb “depths,” that is, deep waters (see Ps 69:2, 14; Isa 51:10), a metaphor for the life-threatening danger faced by the psalmist.
- 2 Heb “my voice.”
- 3 Heb “may your ears be attentive to the voice of.”
- 4 Heb “observe.”
- 5 The words “before you” are supplied in the translation for clarification. The psalmist must be referring to standing before God’s judgment seat. The rhetorical question expects the answer, “No one.”
- 6 Or “surely.”
- 7 Heb “for with you [there is] forgiveness.”
- 8 Or “consequently you are.”
- 9 Heb “feared.”
- 10 Or “wait for.”
- 11 Heb “my soul waits.”
- 12 Heb “his word.”
- 13 Heb “my soul for the master.”
- 14 Heb “more than watchmen for the morning, watchmen for the morning.” The words “yes, more” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.
- 15 Heb “for with the Lord [is] loyal love.”
- 16 Heb “and abundantly with him [is] redemption.”
- 17 Or “redeem.”
- 18 The Hebrew noun עָוֹן (’avon) can refer to sin, the guilt sin produces, or the consequences of sin. Only here is the noun collocated with the verb פָּדָה (padah, “to redeem; to deliver”). The psalmist may refer to forgiveness per se (v. 4), but the emphasis in this context is likely on deliverance from the national consequences of sin. See L. C. Allen, Psalms 101–150 (), .

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord!
O Lord, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
to the voice of my pleas for mercy!
If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could stand?
But with you there is forgiveness,
that you may be feared.
I wait for the Lord, my soul waits,
and in his word I hope;
my soul waits for the Lord
more than watchmen for the morning,
more than watchmen for the morning.
O Israel, hope in the Lord!
For with the Lord there is steadfast love,
and with him is plentiful redemption.
And he will redeem Israel
from all his iniquities.

Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord;
Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
to my cry for mercy.
If you, Lord, kept a record of sins,
Lord, who could stand?
But with you there is forgiveness,
so that we can, with reverence, serve you.
I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits,
and in his word I put my hope.
I wait for the Lord
more than watchmen wait for the morning,
more than watchmen wait for the morning.
Israel, put your hope in the Lord,
for with the Lord is unfailing love
and with him is full redemption.
He himself will redeem Israel
from all their sins.

Out of the depths I call to you, Lord!
Lord, listen to my voice;
let your ears be attentive
to my cry for help.
Lord, if you kept an account of iniquities,
Lord, who could stand?
But with you there is forgiveness,
so that you may be revered.
I wait for the Lord; I wait
and put my hope in his word.
I wait for the Lord
more than watchmen for the morning—
more than watchmen for the morning.

NLTNew Living Translation
From the depths of despair, O Lord,
I call for your help.
Hear my cry, O Lord.
Pay attention to my prayer.
Lord, if you kept a record of our sins,
who, O Lord, could ever survive?
But you offer forgiveness,
that we might learn to fear you.
I am counting on the Lord;
yes, I am counting on him.
I have put my hope in his word.
I long for the Lord
more than sentries long for the dawn,
yes, more than sentries long for the dawn.
O Israel, hope in the Lord;
for with the Lord there is unfailing love.
His redemption overflows.
He himself will redeem Israel
from every kind of sin.

Out of the depths I call to you, O Yahweh.
“O Lord, hear my voice.
Let your ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplications.
If you, O Yah, should keep track of iniquities,
O Lord, who could stand?
But with you is forgiveness,
so that you may be feared.”
I await Yahweh; my soul awaits,
and I wait for his word.
My soul waits for the Lord
more than watchmen for the morning.
Yes, more than watchmen for the morning.
O Israel, wait for Yahweh.
For with Yahweh there is loyal love,
and with him there is abundant redemption.
And he will redeem Israel
from all its iniquities.

KJV 1900King James Version
Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord.
Lord, hear my voice:
Let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.
If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities,
O Lord, who shall stand?
But there is forgiveness with thee,
That thou mayest be feared.
I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait,
And in his word do I hope.
My soul waiteth for the Lord
More than they that watch for the morning:
I say, more than they that watch for the morning.
Let Israel hope in the Lord:
For with the Lord there is mercy,
And with him is plenteous redemption.
And he shall redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.
