A song of ascents.12

125:1Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion;

it cannot be upended and will endure forever.

125:2As the mountains surround Jerusalem,1

so the Lord surrounds his people,

now and forevermore.

125:3Indeed,2 the scepter of a wicked king3 will not settle4

upon the allotted land of the godly.

Otherwise the godly might

do what is wrong.5

125:4Do good, O Lord, to those who are good,

to the morally upright!6

125:5As for those who are bent on traveling a sinful path,7

may the Lord remove them,8 along with those who behave wickedly!9

May Israel experience peace!10

Footnotes

  1. 12 The precise significance of this title, which appears in Pss 120–134, is unclear. Perhaps worshipers recited these psalms when they ascended the road to Jerusalem to celebrate annual religious festivals. For a discussion of their background see L. C. Allen, Psalms 101–150 (), .
  2. 1 For location see ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; .
  3. 2 Or “for.”
  4. 3 Heb “a scepter of wickedness.” The “scepter” symbolizes royal authority; when collocated with “wickedness” the phrase refers to an oppressive foreign conqueror.
  5. 4 Or “rest.”
  6. 5 Heb “so that the godly might not stretch out their hands in wrongdoing.” A wicked king who sets a sinful example can have an adverse moral and ethical effect on the people he rules.
  7. 6 Heb “pure of heart.” The “heart” is here viewed as the seat of one’s moral character and motives. The “pure of heart” are God’s faithful followers who trust in and love the Lord and, as a result, experience his deliverance (see Pss 7:10; 11:2; 32:11; 36:10; 64:10; 94:15; 97:11).
  8. 7 Heb “and the ones making their paths twisted.” A sinful lifestyle is compared to a twisting, winding road.
  9. 8 Heb “lead them away.” The prefixed verbal form is understood as a jussive of prayer here (note the prayers directly before and after this). Another option is to translate, “the Lord will remove them” (cf. , ).
  10. 9 Heb “the workers of wickedness.”
  11. 10 Heb “peace [be] upon Israel.” The statement is understood as a prayer (see Ps 122:8 for a similar prayer for peace).

ESVEnglish Standard Version

A Song of Ascents.

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,

which cannot be moved, but abides forever.

As the mountains surround Jerusalem,

so the Lord surrounds his people,

from this time forth and forevermore.

For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest

on the land allotted to the righteous,

lest the righteous stretch out

their hands to do wrong.

Do good, O Lord, to those who are good,

and to those who are upright in their hearts!

But those who turn aside to their crooked ways

the Lord will lead away with evildoers!

Peace be upon Israel!

NIVNew International Version (2011)

A song of ascents.

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,

which cannot be shaken but endures forever.

As the mountains surround Jerusalem,

so the Lord surrounds his people

both now and forevermore.

The scepter of the wicked will not remain

over the land allotted to the righteous,

for then the righteous might use

their hands to do evil.

Lord, do good to those who are good,

to those who are upright in heart.

But those who turn to crooked ways

the Lord will banish with the evildoers.

Peace be on Israel.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

A song of ascents.

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion.

It cannot be shaken; it remains forever.

The mountains surround Jerusalem

and the Lord surrounds his people,

both now and forever.

The scepter of the wicked will not remain

over the land allotted to the righteous,

so that the righteous will not apply their hands to injustice.

Do what is good, Lord, to the good,

to those whose hearts are upright.

But as for those who turn aside to crooked ways,

the Lord will banish them with the evildoers.

Peace be with Israel.

NLTNew Living Translation

A song for pilgrims ascending to Jerusalem.

Those who trust in the Lord are as secure as Mount Zion;

they will not be defeated but will endure forever.

Just as the mountains surround Jerusalem,

so the Lord surrounds his people, both now and forever.

The wicked will not rule the land of the godly,

for then the godly might be tempted to do wrong.

O Lord, do good to those who are good,

whose hearts are in tune with you.

But banish those who turn to crooked ways, O Lord.

Take them away with those who do evil.

May Israel have peace!

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

A song of ascents.

Those who trust in Yahweh

are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved,

but abides forever.

As mountains are round about Jerusalem,

so Yahweh is round about his people,

from now until forever.

For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest

on the land of the righteous,

lest the righteous stretch out

their hands to do wickedness.

Do good, O Yahweh, to the good,

and to those upright in their hearts.

But regarding those who turn aside to their crooked ways,

Yahweh will lead them away with the evildoers.

Peace be upon Israel.

KJV 1900King James Version

A Song of degrees.

They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion,

Which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.

As the mountains are round about Jerusalem,

So the Lord is round about his people

From henceforth even for ever.

For the rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous;

Lest the righteous put forth their hands unto iniquity.

Do good, O Lord, unto those that be good,

And to them that are upright in their hearts.

As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways,

The Lord shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity:

But peace shall be upon Israel.
