104:19He made the moon to mark the months,24
and the sun sets according to a regular schedule.25
104:20You make it dark and night comes,26
during which all the beasts of the forest prowl around.
104:21The lions roar for prey,
seeking their food from God.27
104:22When the sun rises, they withdraw
and sleep28 in their dens.
104:23Men then go out to do their work,
and labor away until evening.29
Footnotes
- 24 Heb “he made [the] moon for appointed times.” The phrase “appointed times” probably refers to the months of the Hebrew lunar calendar.
- 25 Heb more metaphorically, “knows its setting.”
- 26 Heb “you make darkness, so that it might be night.”
- 27 The lions’ roaring is viewed as a request for food from God.
- 28 Heb “lie down.”
- 29 Heb “man goes out to his work, and to his labor until evening.”

He made the moon to mark the seasons;
the sun knows its time for setting.
You make darkness, and it is night,
when all the beasts of the forest creep about.
The young lions roar for their prey,
seeking their food from God.
When the sun rises, they steal away
and lie down in their dens.
Man goes out to his work
and to his labor until the evening.

He made the moon to mark the seasons,
and the sun knows when to go down.
You bring darkness, it becomes night,
and all the beasts of the forest prowl.
The lions roar for their prey
and seek their food from God.
The sun rises, and they steal away;
they return and lie down in their dens.
Then people go out to their work,
to their labor until evening.

and lie down in their dens.

NLTNew Living Translation
You made the moon to mark the seasons,
and the sun knows when to set.
You send the darkness, and it becomes night,
when all the forest animals prowl about.
Then the young lions roar for their prey,
stalking the food provided by God.
At dawn they slink back
into their dens to rest.
Then people go off to their work,
where they labor until evening.

KJV 1900King James Version
He appointed the moon for seasons:
The sun knoweth his going down.
Thou makest darkness, and it is night:
Wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth.
The young lions roar after their prey,
And seek their meat from God.
The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together,
And lay them down in their dens.
Man goeth forth unto his work
And to his labour until the evening.
