Jerusalem Will Be Vindicated

7:8My enemies,19 do not gloat20 over me!

Though I have fallen, I will get up.

Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light.21

7:9I must endure22 the Lord’s anger,

for I have sinned against him.

But then23 he will defend my cause,24

and accomplish justice on my behalf.

He will lead me out into the light;

I will experience firsthand25 his deliverance.26

7:10When my enemies see this, they will be covered with shame.

They say27 to me, “Where is the Lord your God?”

I will gloat over them.28

Then they will be trampled down29

like mud in the streets.

7:11It will be a day for rebuilding your walls;

in that day your boundary will be extended.30

A Closing Prayer

7:12In that day people31 will come to you32

from Assyria as far as33 Egypt,

from Egypt as far as the Euphrates River,34

from the seacoasts35 and the mountains.36

Footnotes

  1. 19 The singular form is understood as collective.
  2. 20 Or “rejoice” (, , , ); “don’t laugh at me.”
  3. 21 Darkness represents judgment; light (also in v. 9) symbolizes deliverance. The Lord is the source of the latter.
  4. 22 Heb “lift, bear.”
  5. 23 Heb “until.”
  6. 24 Or “plead my case” ( and both similar); “until he takes my side.”
  7. 25 Heb “see.”
  8. 26 Or “justice, vindication.”
  9. 27 Heb “who say.” A new sentence was begun here in the translation for stylistic reasons.
  10. 28 Heb “My eyes will look on them.”
  11. 29 Heb “a trampled-down place.”
  12. 30 Personified Jerusalem declares her confidence in vv. 8–10; in this verse she is assured that she will indeed be vindicated.
  13. 31 Heb “they.” The referent has been specified as “people,” referring either to the nations (coming to God with their tribute) or to the exiles of Israel (returning to the Lord).
  14. 32 The masculine pronominal suffix suggests the Lord is addressed. Some emend to a feminine form and take Jerusalem as the addressee.
  15. 33 The reads וְעָרֵי (vé’arey, “and the cities [of Egypt]”), but the parallel line indicates this is a corruption of וְעַד (vé’ad, “even to”).
  16. 34 Heb “the River,” referring to the Euphrates River. This has been specified in the translation for clarity (so also , ).
  17. 35 Heb “and sea from sea.” Many prefer to emend this to מִיָּם עַד יָם (miyyam ’ad yam, “from sea to sea”).
  18. 36 Heb “and mountain of the mountain.” Many prefer to emend this to וּמֵהַר עַד הַר (umehar ’ad har, “and mountain to mountain”).

ESVEnglish Standard Version

Rejoice not over me, O my enemy;

when I fall, I shall rise;

when I sit in darkness,

the Lord will be a light to me.

I will bear the indignation of the Lord

because I have sinned against him,

until he pleads my cause

and executes judgment for me.

He will bring me out to the light;

I shall look upon his vindication.

Then my enemy will see,

and shame will cover her who said to me,

“Where is the Lord your God?”

My eyes will look upon her;

now she will be trampled down

like the mire of the streets.

A day for the building of your walls!

In that day the boundary shall be far extended.

In that day they will come to you,

from Assyria and the cities of Egypt,

and from Egypt to the River,

from sea to sea and from mountain to mountain.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Do not gloat over me, my enemy!

Though I have fallen, I will rise.

Though I sit in darkness,

the Lord will be my light.

Because I have sinned against him,

I will bear the Lord’s wrath,

until he pleads my case

and upholds my cause.

He will bring me out into the light;

I will see his righteousness.

Then my enemy will see it

and will be covered with shame,

she who said to me,

“Where is the Lord your God?”

My eyes will see her downfall;

even now she will be trampled underfoot

like mire in the streets.

The day for building your walls will come,

the day for extending your boundaries.

In that day people will come to you

from Assyria and the cities of Egypt,

even from Egypt to the Euphrates

and from sea to sea

and from mountain to mountain.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Do not rejoice over me, my enemy!

Though I have fallen, I will stand up;

though I sit in darkness,

the Lord will be my light.

Because I have sinned against him,

I must endure the Lord’s fury

until he champions my cause

and establishes justice for me.

He will bring me into the light;

I will see his salvation.

Then my enemy will see,

and she will be covered with shame,

the one who said to me,

“Where is the Lord your God?”

My eyes will look at her in triumph;

at that time she will be trampled

like mud in the streets.

A day will come for rebuilding your walls;

on that day your boundary will be extended.

On that day people will come to you

from Assyria and the cities of Egypt,

even from Egypt to the Euphrates River

and from sea to sea

and mountain to mountain.

NLTNew Living Translation

Do not gloat over me, my enemies!

For though I fall, I will rise again.

Though I sit in darkness,

the Lord will be my light.

I will be patient as the Lord punishes me,

for I have sinned against him.

But after that, he will take up my case

and give me justice for all I have suffered from my enemies.

The Lord will bring me into the light,

and I will see his righteousness.

Then my enemies will see that the Lord is on my side.

They will be ashamed that they taunted me, saying,

“So where is the Lord—

that God of yours?”

With my own eyes I will see their downfall;

they will be trampled like mud in the streets.

In that day, Israel, your cities will be rebuilt,

and your borders will be extended.

People from many lands will come and honor you—

from Assyria all the way to the towns of Egypt,

from Egypt all the way to the Euphrates River,

and from distant seas and mountains.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

You should not rejoice over me, O my enemy!

When I fall I will stand up;

when I sit in darkness

Yahweh will be a light for me.

I will bear the rage of Yahweh,

for I have sinned against him,

until he pleads my cause

and executes my justice.

He will bring me out to the light;

I will see his righteousness.

Then my enemy will see,

and shame will cover her who said to me,

“Where is Yahweh your God?”

My eyes will look upon her;

now she will become a trampling place,

like mud in the streets.

A day for building your walls;

on that day he will extend your boundary.

On that day he will come to you

from Assyria and the cities of Egypt,

and from Egypt to the River,

and from sea to sea

and mountain to mountain.

KJV 1900King James Version

Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy:

When I fall, I shall arise;

When I sit in darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me.

I will bear the indignation of the Lord, because I have sinned against him,

Until he plead my cause, and execute judgment for me:

He will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness.

Then she that is mine enemy shall see it, and shame shall cover her

Which said unto me, Where is the Lord thy God?

Mine eyes shall behold her:

Now shall she be trodden down as the mire of the streets.

In the day that thy walls are to be built,

In that day shall the decree be far removed.

In that day also he shall come even to thee

From Assyria, and from the fortified cities,

And from the fortress even to the river,

And from sea to sea, and from mountain to mountain.
