Micah Laments Judah’s Sin

7:1I am depressed!1

Indeed,2 it is as if the summer fruit has been gathered,

and the grapes have been harvested.3

There is no grape cluster to eat,

no fresh figs that I crave so much.4

Footnotes

  1. 1 Heb “woe to me!” In light of the image that follows, perhaps one could translate, “I am disappointed.”
  2. 2 Or “for.”
  3. 3 Heb “I am like the gathering of the summer fruit, like the gleanings of the harvest.” Micah is not comparing himself to the harvested fruit. There is an ellipsis here, as the second half of the verse makes clear. The idea is, “I am like [one at the time] the summer fruit is gathered and the grapes are harvested.”
  4. 4 Heb “my appetite craves.”

In other versions

ESVEnglish Standard Version

Woe is me! For I have become

as when the summer fruit has been gathered,

as when the grapes have been gleaned:

there is no cluster to eat,

no first-ripe fig that my soul desires.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

What misery is mine!

I am like one who gathers summer fruit

at the gleaning of the vineyard;

there is no cluster of grapes to eat,

none of the early figs that I crave.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

How sad for me!

For I am like one who—

when the summer fruit has been gathered

after the gleaning of the grape harvest—

finds no grape cluster to eat,

no early fig, which I crave.

NLTNew Living Translation

How miserable I am!

I feel like the fruit picker after the harvest

who can find nothing to eat.

Not a cluster of grapes or a single early fig

can be found to satisfy my hunger.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Woe is me! For I have become

like the gatherings of summer,

like the gleanings of the grape harvest,

when there is no cluster of grapes to eat

or early ripened fruit that my soul desires.

KJV 1900King James Version

Woe is me! for I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits,

As the grapegleanings of the vintage:

There is no cluster to eat:

My soul desired the firstripe fruit.
