1:6“I will turn Samaria24 into a heap of ruins in an open field—
vineyards will be planted there!25
I will tumble26 the rubble of her stone walls27 down into the valley,
and tear down her fortifications to their foundations.28
1:7All her carved idols will be smashed to pieces;
all her metal cult statues will be destroyed by fire.29
I will make a waste heap30 of all her images.
Since31 she gathered the metal32 as a prostitute collects her wages,
the idols will become a prostitute’s wages again.”33
Footnotes
- 24 For location see ; ; ; ; .
- 25 Heb “into a planting place for vineyards.”
- 26 Heb “pour” (so , ); , “pour down”; “throw down”; “roll.”
- 27 Heb “her stones.” The term stones is a metonymy for the city walls whose foundations were constructed of stone masonry.
- 28 Heb “I will uncover her foundations.” The term “foundations” refers to the lower courses of the stones of the city’s outer fortification walls.
- 29 Heb “and all her prostitute’s wages will be burned with fire.” The precious metal used by Samaria’s pagan worship centers to make idols are here compared to a prostitute’s wages because Samaria had been unfaithful to the Lord and prostituted herself to pagan gods, such as Baal.
- 30 Heb “I will make desolate” (so ).
- 31 Or “for” (, , ).
- 32 No object is specified in the Hebrew text; the words “the metal” are supplied from the context.
- 33 Heb “for from a prostitute’s wages she gathered, and to a prostitute’s wages they will return.” When the metal was first collected it was comparable to the coins a prostitute would receive for her services. The metal was then formed into idols, but now the Lord’s fiery judgment would reduce the metal images to their original condition.

Therefore I will make Samaria a heap in the open country,
a place for planting vineyards,
and I will pour down her stones into the valley
and uncover her foundations.
All her carved images shall be beaten to pieces,
all her wages shall be burned with fire,
and all her idols I will lay waste,
for from the fee of a prostitute she gathered them,
and to the fee of a prostitute they shall return.

“Therefore I will make Samaria a heap of rubble,
a place for planting vineyards.
I will pour her stones into the valley
and lay bare her foundations.
All her idols will be broken to pieces;
all her temple gifts will be burned with fire;
I will destroy all her images.
Since she gathered her gifts from the wages of prostitutes,
as the wages of prostitutes they will again be used.”

Therefore, I will make Samaria
a heap of ruins in the countryside,
a planting area for a vineyard.
I will roll her stones into the valley
and expose her foundations.
All her carved images will be smashed to pieces;
all her wages will be burned in the fire,
and I will destroy all her idols.
Since she collected the wages of a prostitute,
they will be used again for a prostitute.

NLTNew Living Translation
“So I, the Lord, will make the city of Samaria
a heap of ruins.
Her streets will be plowed up
for planting vineyards.
I will roll the stones of her walls into the valley below,
exposing her foundations.
All her carved images will be smashed.
All her sacred treasures will be burned.
These things were bought with the money
earned by her prostitution,
and they will now be carried away
to pay prostitutes elsewhere.”

a place for planting a vineyard.
And I will pour down her stones into the valley

KJV 1900King James Version
Therefore I will make Samaria as an heap of the field,
And as plantings of a vineyard:
And I will pour down the stones thereof into the valley,
And I will discover the foundations thereof.
And all the graven images thereof shall be beaten to pieces,
And all the hires thereof shall be burned with the fire,
And all the idols thereof will I lay desolate:
For she gathered it of the hire of an harlot,
And they shall return to the hire of an harlot.
