The Disciples’ Failure to Heal

17:14When24 they came to the crowd, a man came to him, knelt before him, 17:15and said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, because he has seizures25 and suffers terribly, for he often falls into the fire and into the water. 17:16I brought him to your disciples, but26 they were not able to heal him.” 17:17Jesus answered,27 “You28 unbelieving29 and perverse generation! How much longer30 must I be with you? How much longer must I endure31 you?32 Bring him here to me.” 17:18Then33 Jesus rebuked34 the demon and it came out of him, and the boy was healed from that moment. 17:19Then the disciples came35 to Jesus privately and said, “Why couldn’t we cast it out?” 17:20He told them, “It was because of your little faith. I tell you the truth,36 if you have faith the size of37 a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; nothing38 will be impossible for you.”39

Footnotes

  1. 24 Here καί (kai) has not been translated.
  2. 25 Grk “he is moonstruck,” possibly meaning “lunatic” (so , ), although now the term is generally regarded as referring to some sort of seizure disorder such as epilepsy (L&N 23.169; σεληνιάζομαι).
  3. 26 Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast present in this context.
  4. 27 Grk “And answering, Jesus said.” This is somewhat redundant and has been simplified in the translation.
  5. 28 Grk “O.” The marker of direct address, ὦ (ō), is functionally equivalent to a vocative and is represented in the translation by “you.”
  6. 29 Or “faithless.” The rebuke for lack of faith has OT roots: Num 14:27; Deut 32:5, 30; Isa 59:8.
  7. 30 Grk “how long.”
  8. 31 Or “put up with.” See Num 11:12; Isa 46:4.
  9. 32 The pronouns you … you are plural, indicating that Jesus is speaking to a group rather than an individual.
  10. 33 Here καί (kai) has been translated as “Then.”
  11. 34 Or “commanded” (often with the implication of a threat, L&N 33.331).
  12. 35 Grk “coming, the disciples said.” The participle προσελθόντες (proselthontes) has been translated as a finite verb to make the sequence of events clear in English.
  13. 36 Grk “For truly (ἀμήν, amēn), I say to you.” Here γάρ (gar) has not been translated.
  14. 37 Grk “faith as,” “faith like.”
  15. 38 Here καί (kai) has not been translated.
  16. 39 Many important (א* B Θ 0281 33 579 892* e ff1 sys,c sa) do not include 17:21 “But this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” The verse is included in א2 C D L W f1, 13 𝔐 lat, but is almost certainly not original. As B. M. Metzger notes, “Since there is no satisfactory reason why the passage, if originally present in Matthew, should have been omitted in a wide variety of witnesses, and since copyists frequently inserted material derived from another Gospel, it appears that most manuscripts have been assimilated to the parallel in Mk 9.29” ( ). The present translation follows in omitting the verse number as well, a procedure also followed by a number of other modern translations.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and, kneeling before him, said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he has seizures and he suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him.” And Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.” And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”

NIVNew International Version (2011)

When they came to the crowd, a man approached Jesus and knelt before him. “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering greatly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. I brought him to your disciples, but they could not heal him.”

“You unbelieving and perverse generation,” Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of the boy, and he was healed at that moment.

Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

CSBChristian Standard Bible

When they reached the crowd, a man approached and knelt down before him. “Lord,” he said, “have mercy on my son, because he has seizures and suffers terribly. He often falls into the fire and often into the water. I brought him to your disciples, but they couldn’t heal him.”

Jesus replied, “You unbelieving and perverse generation, how long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to me.” Then Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and from that moment the boy was healed.

Then the disciples approached Jesus privately and said, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

“Because of your little faith,” he told them. “For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

NLTNew Living Translation

At the foot of the mountain, a large crowd was waiting for them. A man came and knelt before Jesus and said, “Lord, have mercy on my son. He has seizures and suffers terribly. He often falls into the fire or into the water. So I brought him to your disciples, but they couldn’t heal him.”

Jesus said, “You faithless and corrupt people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.” Then Jesus rebuked the demon in the boy, and it left him. From that moment the boy was well.

Afterward the disciples asked Jesus privately, “Why couldn’t we cast out that demon?”

“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

And when they came to the crowd, a man approached him, kneeling down before him and saying, “Lord, have mercy on my son, because he has seizures and suffers severely, for often he falls into the fire and often into the water. And I brought him to your disciples, and they were not able to heal him.” And Jesus answered and said, “O unbelieving and perverse generation! How long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to me!” And Jesus rebuked him, and the demon came out of him and the boy was healed from that hour.

Then the disciples approached Jesus privately and said, Why were we not able to expel it?” And he said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith like a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”

KJV 1900King James Version

And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him hither to me. And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour. Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out? And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
