Restoration through Confession and Repentance

26:39“ ‘As for the ones who remain among you, they will rot away because of59 their iniquity in the lands of your enemies, and they will also rot away because of their ancestors’60 iniquities which are with them. 26:40However, when61 they confess their iniquity and their ancestors’ iniquity which they committed by trespassing against me,62 by which they also walked63 in hostility against me6426:41(and I myself will walk in hostility against them and bring them into the land of their enemies), and65 then their uncircumcised hearts become humbled and they make up for66 their iniquity, 26:42I will remember my covenant with Jacob and also my covenant with Isaac and also my covenant with Abraham,67 and I will remember the land.

Footnotes

  1. 59 Heb “in” (so , ; also later in this verse).
  2. 60 Heb “fathers’ ” (also in the following verse).
  3. 61 Heb “And.” Many English versions take this to be a conditional clause (“if …”) though there is no conditional particle (see, e.g., , , ; but see the very different rendering in B. A. Levine, Leviticus [], ). The temporal translation offered here (“when”) takes into account the particle אָז (’az, “then”), which occurs twice in v. 41. The obvious contextual contrast between vv. 39 and 40 is expressed by “however” in the translation.
  4. 62 Heb “in their trespassing which they trespassed in me.” See the note on , although the term is used in a more technical sense there in relation to the “guilt offering.”
  5. 63 Heb “and also which they walked.”
  6. 64 Heb “with me.”
  7. 65 Heb “or then,” although the has “then” and the “and then.”
  8. 66 Heb “and then they make up for.” On the verb “make up for” see the note on v. above.
  9. 67 Heb “my covenant with Abraham I will remember.” The phrase “I will remember” has not been repeated in the translation for stylistic reasons.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

And those of you who are left shall rot away in your enemies’ lands because of their iniquity, and also because of the iniquities of their fathers they shall rot away like them.

“But if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers in their treachery that they committed against me, and also in walking contrary to me, so that I walked contrary to them and brought them into the land of their enemies—if then their uncircumcised heart is humbled and they make amends for their iniquity, then I will remember my covenant with Jacob, and I will remember my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Those of you who are left will waste away in the lands of their enemies because of their sins; also because of their ancestors’ sins they will waste away.

“ ‘But if they will confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors—their unfaithfulness and their hostility toward me, which made me hostile toward them so that I sent them into the land of their enemies—then when their uncircumcised hearts are humbled and they pay for their sin, I will remember my covenant with Jacob and my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Those who survive in the lands of your enemies will waste away because of their iniquity; they will also waste away because of their ancestors’ iniquities along with theirs.

“But when they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their ancestors—their unfaithfulness that they practiced against me, and how they acted with hostility toward me, and I acted with hostility toward them and brought them into the land of their enemies—and when their uncircumcised hearts are humbled and they make amends for their iniquity, then I will remember my covenant with Jacob. I will also remember my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.

NLTNew Living Translation

Those of you who survive will waste away in your enemies’ lands because of their sins and the sins of their ancestors.

“But at last my people will confess their sins and the sins of their ancestors for betraying me and being hostile toward me. When I have turned their hostility back on them and brought them to the land of their enemies, then at last their stubborn hearts will be humbled, and they will pay for their sins. Then I will remember my covenant with Jacob and my covenant with Isaac and my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

And because of their guilt, the ones among you who remain shall decay in the land of their enemies; and also because of the iniquities of their ancestors, they shall decay with them.

“ ‘But when they confess their guilt and the guilt of their ancestors in their infidelity that they displayed against me, and moreover that they went against me in hostility— I myself also went against them in hostility, and I brought them into the land of their enemies—or if then their uncircumcised heart is humbled and then they pay for their guilt, I will remember my covenant with Jacob; and I will remember also my covenant with Isaac and also my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land.

KJV 1900King James Version

And they that are left of you shall pine away in their iniquity in your enemies’ lands; and also in the iniquities of their fathers shall they pine away with them. If they shall confess their iniquity, and the iniquity of their fathers, with their trespass which they trespassed against me, and that also they have walked contrary unto me; And that I also have walked contrary unto them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity: Then will I remember my covenant with Jacob, and also my covenant with Isaac, and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember; and I will remember the land.
