Footnotes

  1. 7 See the note on .
  2. 8 Heb “and bake it twelve loaves”; , , “cakes.”
  3. 9 The words “of flour” are supplied in the translation for clarity. See the note on .
  4. 10 Heb “six of the row.”
  5. 11 This is not just any “incense” (קְטֹרֶת, qétoret; R. E. Averbeck, 3:), but specifically “frankincense” (לְבֹנָה, lévonah; R. E. Averbeck, 2:).
  6. 12 Heb “on [עַל, ’al] the row,” probably used distributively, “on each row” (J. E. Hartley, Leviticus [], ). Perhaps the frankincense was placed “with” or “along side of” each row, not actually on the bread itself, and was actually burned as incense to the Lord (cf. “Along [Alongside ] each row”; “with each row”; “near each row”; B. A. Levine, Leviticus [], ). This particular preposition can have such a meaning.
  7. 13 The “memorial portion” (אַזְכָרָה, ’azkharah) was normally the part of the grain offering that was burnt on the altar (see Lev 2:2 and the notes there), as opposed to the remainder, which was normally consumed by the priests (Lev 2:3; see the full regulations in Lev 6:14–23 [6:7–16 ]).
  8. 14 See the note on regarding the term “gift.”
  9. 15 Heb “In the day of the Sabbath, in the day of the Sabbath.” The repetition is distributive. A few medieval Hebrew , the , and the delete the second occurrence of the expression.
  10. 16 Heb “he”; the referent (Aaron) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
  11. 17 The word “portion” is supplied in the translation here for clarity, to specify what “this” refers to.

Every Sabbath day Aaron shall arrange it before the Lord regularly; it is from the people of Israel as a covenant forever.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

“Take the finest flour and bake twelve loaves of bread, using two-tenths of an ephah for each loaf. Arrange them in two stacks, six in each stack, on the table of pure gold before the Lord. This bread is to be set out before the Lord regularly, Sabbath after Sabbath, on behalf of the Israelites, as a lasting covenant.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

“Take fine flour and bake it into twelve loaves; each loaf is to be made with four quarts. Arrange them in two rows, six to a row, on the pure gold table before the Lord. The bread is to be set out before the Lord every Sabbath day as a permanent covenant obligation on the part of the Israelites.

NLTNew Living Translation

“You must bake twelve flat loaves of bread from choice flour, using four quarts of flour for each loaf. Place the bread before the Lord on the pure gold table, and arrange the loaves in two stacks, with six loaves in each stack. Put some pure frankincense near each stack to serve as a representative offering, a special gift presented to the Lord. Every Sabbath day this bread must be laid out before the Lord as a gift from the Israelites; it is an ongoing expression of the eternal covenant.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible
