Footnotes
- 111 Heb “my life.”
- 112 Heb “I said,” meaning “I said to myself” = “I thought.”
- 113 Heb “I was about to be cut off.” The verb נִגְזָרְתִּי (nigzarti), Niphal perfect 1st person common singular from גָּזַר (gazar, “to be cut off”), functions in an ingressive sense: “about to be cut off.” It is used in reference to the threat of death (e.g., Ezek 37:11). To be “cut off” from the hand of the living means to experience death (Ps 88:6).
- 114 Heb “from a pit of lowest places.”
- 115 The verb could be understood as a precative, “hear my plea,” parallel to the following volitive verb, “do not close.”
- 116 Heb “my voice.”
- 117 The preposition ל (lamed) continues syntactically from “my plea” in the previous line (e.g. Ex 5:2; Josh 22:2; 1 Sam 8:7; 12:1; Jer 43:4).

They tried to end my life in a pit
and threw stones at me;
the waters closed over my head,
and I thought I was about to perish.
I called on your name, Lord,
from the depths of the pit.
You heard my plea: “Do not close your ears
to my cry for relief.”

They smothered my life in a pit
and threw stones on me.
Water flooded over my head,

I called on your name, Lord,
from the depths of the pit.
You heard my plea:
Do not ignore my cry for relief.

They threw me into a pit
and dropped stones on me.
The water rose over my head,
and I cried out, “This is the end!”
But I called on your name, Lord,
from deep within the pit.
You heard me when I cried, “Listen to my pleading!
Hear my cry for help!”

They have silenced me in a pit,
they have thrown a stone at me.
Water has flown over my head,
I said, “I am cut off.”
I have called your name, O Yahweh,
from the depths of the pit.
You have heard my cry, “Do not shut your ear
to my cry for help, for my relief!”

KJV 1900King James Version
They have cut off my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone upon me.
Waters flowed over mine head; then I said, I am cut off.
I called upon thy name, O Lord, out of the low dungeon.
Thou hast heard my voice: hide not thine ear at my breathing, at my cry.
