The Lord Speaks to Joshua

13:1When Joshua was very old,1 the Lord told him, “You are very old, and a great deal of land remains to be conquered. 13:2This is the land that remains: all the territory of the Philistines and all the Geshurites, 13:3from the Shihor River2 east of3 Egypt northward to the territory of Ekron (it is regarded as Canaanite territory),4 including the area belonging to the five Philistine lords who ruled in Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron, as well as Avvite land513:4to the south;6 all the Canaanite territory,7 from Arah8 in the region of Sidon9 to Aphek, as far as Amorite territory; 13:5the territory of Byblos10 and all Lebanon to the east, from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo Hamath.1113:6I will drive out before the Israelites all who live in the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth Maim,12 all the Sidonians; you be sure to parcel it out to Israel as I instructed you.”1313:7Now, divide up this land14 among the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”

Footnotes

  1. 1 Heb “was old, coming into the days.” This expression, referring to advancing in years, also occurs in the following clause.
  2. 2 Heb “the Shihor”; the word “River” is not in the Hebrew text, but has been supplied to clarify the meaning.
  3. 3 Heb “in front of.”
  4. 4 Heb “it is reckoned to the Canaanites.”
  5. 5 Heb “the five lords of the Philistines, the Gazaite, the Ashdodite, the Ashkelonite, the Gathite, and the Ekronite, and the Avvites.”
  6. 6 Or “from Teman.” The phrase is especially problematic if taken with what follows, as the traditional verse division suggests. For further discussion see T. C. Butler, Joshua (), .
  7. 7 Heb “all the land of the Canaanites.”
  8. 8 The reading “Arah” assumes a slight emendation of the Hebrew vowel pointing. The reads, “and a cave,” or “and Mearah” (if one understands the word as a proper noun).
  9. 9 Heb “which belongs to the Sidonians.” For location see ; ; .
  10. 10 Heb “and the land of the Gebalites.”
  11. 11 Or “the entrance to Hamath.” Most modern translations take the phrase “Lebo Hamath” to be a proper name, but often provide a note with the alternative, where “Hamath” is the proper name and לְבוֹא (lévo’) is taken to mean “entrance to.”
  12. 12 The meaning of the Hebrew name “Misrephoth Maim” is perhaps “lime-kilns by the water” (see 2:).
  13. 13 Heb “only you, assign it by lots to Israel as an inheritance as I commanded you.”
  14. 14 Heb “now apportion this land as an inheritance.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

Now Joshua was old and advanced in years, and the Lord said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and there remains yet very much land to possess. This is the land that yet remains: all the regions of the Philistines, and all those of the Geshurites (from the Shihor, which is east of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron, it is counted as Canaanite; there are five rulers of the Philistines, those of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron), and those of the Avvim, in the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, to Aphek, to the boundary of the Amorites, and the land of the Gebalites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrise, from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo-hamath, all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim, even all the Sidonians. I myself will drive them out from before the people of Israel. Only allot the land to Israel for an inheritance, as I have commanded you. Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

NIVNew International Version (2011)

When Joshua had grown old, the Lord said to him, “You are now very old, and there are still very large areas of land to be taken over.

“This is the land that remains: all the regions of the Philistines and Geshurites, from the Shihor River on the east of Egypt to the territory of Ekron on the north, all of it counted as Canaanite though held by the five Philistine rulers in Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron; the territory of the Avvites on the south; all the land of the Canaanites, from Arah of the Sidonians as far as Aphek and the border of the Amorites; the area of Byblos; and all Lebanon to the east, from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo Hamath.

“As for all the inhabitants of the mountain regions from Lebanon to Misrephoth Maim, that is, all the Sidonians, I myself will drive them out before the Israelites. Be sure to allocate this land to Israel for an inheritance, as I have instructed you, and divide it as an inheritance among the nine tribes and half of the tribe of Manasseh.”

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Joshua was now old, advanced in age, and the Lord said to him, “You have become old, advanced in age, but a great deal of the land remains to be possessed. This is the land that remains:

All the districts of the Philistines and the Geshurites: from the Shihor east of Egypt to the border of Ekron on the north (considered to be Canaanite territory)—the five Philistine rulers of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron, as well as the Avvites in the south; all the land of the Canaanites, from Arah of the Sidonians to Aphek and as far as the border of the Amorites; the land of the Gebalites; and all Lebanon east from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to the entrance of Hamath—all the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim, all the Sidonians.

I will drive them out before the Israelites, only distribute the land as an inheritance for Israel, as I have commanded you. Therefore, divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and half the tribe of Manasseh.”

NLTNew Living Translation

When Joshua was an old man, the Lord said to him, “You are growing old, and much land remains to be conquered. This is the territory that remains: all the regions of the Philistines and the Geshurites, and the larger territory of the Canaanites, extending from the stream of Shihor on the border of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron. It includes the territory of the five Philistine rulers of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron. The land of the Avvites in the south also remains to be conquered. In the north, the following area has not yet been conquered: all the land of the Canaanites, including Mearah (which belongs to the Sidonians), stretching northward to Aphek on the border of the Amorites; the land of the Gebalites and all of the Lebanon mountain area to the east, from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo-hamath; and all the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim, including all the land of the Sidonians.

“I myself will drive these people out of the land ahead of the Israelites. So be sure to give this land to Israel as a special possession, just as I have commanded you. Include all this territory as Israel’s possession when you divide this land among the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Now Joshua was old and advanced in years, and Yahweh said to him, “You are old and advanced in years, and very much of the land remains to be possessed. This is the remaining land: all the regions of the Philistines, and all of the Geshurites, from the Shihor, which is east of Egypt, up to the border of Ekron to the north, which is reckoned as Canaanite; there are five Philistine rulers: the Gazites, Ashdodites, Ashkelonites, Gittites, Ekronites, and the Avvim. In the south; all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah, which belongs to the Sidonians up to Aphek, to the border of the Amorites, and the land of the Gebalites, and all the Lebanon, toward the east, from Baal Gad at the foot of Mount Hermon up to Lebo-Hamath; all the inhabitants of the hill country, from the Lebanon up to Misrephoth Maim, and all the Sidonians. I will drive them out from before the Israelites; only allocate it to Israel as an inheritance just as I have commanded you. Therefore, divide this land as an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”
