Footnotes

  1. 56 Grk “knew.” Jesus could see. Supernatural knowledge of what the disciples were thinking is not necessarily in view here. Given the disciples’ confused statements in the preceding verses, it was probably obvious to Jesus that they wanted to ask what he meant.
  2. 57 The words “about these things” are not in the Greek text, but are implied. Direct objects were often omitted in Greek when clear from the context.
  3. 58 καί (kai) has been translated as “so” here to indicate the following statement is a result of Jesus’ observation in v. 19a.
  4. 59 Grk “inquiring” or “seeking.”
  5. 60 Grk “A little while, and you.”
  6. 61 Grk “and again a little while, and you.”
  7. 62 Grk “Truly, truly, I say to you.”
  8. 63 Or “wail,” “cry.”
  9. 64 Or “lament.”
  10. 65 Or “sorrowful.”
  11. 66 Grk “will become.”

Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, “Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me’? Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.

NLTNew Living Translation

Jesus realized they wanted to ask him about it, so he said, “Are you asking yourselves what I meant? I said in a little while you won’t see me, but a little while after that you will see me again. I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn over what is going to happen to me, but the world will rejoice. You will grieve, but your grief will suddenly turn to wonderful joy.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Jesus knew that they were wanting to ask him, and he said to them, “Are you deliberating with one another about this—that I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? Truly, truly I say to you, that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; you will become sorrowful, but your sorrow will change to joy.

KJV 1900King James Version

Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye inquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me? Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
