9:25The Lord says, “Watch out!62 The time is soon coming when I will punish all those who are circumcised only in the flesh.639:26That is, I will punish the Egyptians, the Judeans, the Edomites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, and all the desert people who cut their hair short at the temples.64 I will do so because none of the people of those nations are really circumcised in the Lord’s sight.65 Moreover, none of the people of Israel66 are circumcised when it comes to their hearts.”67
Footnotes
- 62 Heb “Behold!”
- 63 Heb “punish all who are circumcised in the flesh.” The translation is contextually motivated to better bring out the contrast that follows.
- 64 Heb “all those who are cut off on the side of the head who live in the desert.” and some other English versions (e.g., “who live in the desert in distant places”; “who live in distant places”) have followed the interpretation that this is a biform of an expression meaning “end or remote parts of the [far] corners [of the earth].” This interpretation is generally abandoned by the more recent commentaries and lexicons (see, e.g. 802 פֵּאָה 1 and פֵּאָה 1.β). It occurs also in 25:33; 49:32.
- 65 Heb “For all of these nations are uncircumcised.” The words “I will do so” are supplied in the translation to indicate the connection with the preceding statement. A contrast is drawn here between circumcision as a mere external cutting of the flesh and a sign of commitment to the covenant and the God of the covenant. The people of these nations practiced circumcision but not as a sign of the covenant. The people of Israel engaged in it as a religious practice but without any obedience to the covenant that it was a sign of or any real commitment to the Lord.
- 66 Heb “house of Israel.”
- 67 Heb “And all the house of Israel is uncircumcised of heart.”

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will punish all those who are circumcised merely in the flesh— Egypt, Judah, Edom, the sons of Ammon, Moab, and all who dwell in the desert who cut the corners of their hair, for all these nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in heart.”

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will punish all who are circumcised only in the flesh—Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon, Moab and all who live in the wilderness in distant places. For all these nations are really uncircumcised, and even the whole house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.”

CSBChristian Standard Bible
“ ‘Look, the days are coming—this is the Lord’s declaration—when I will punish all the circumcised yet uncircumcised: Egypt, Judah, Edom, the Ammonites, Moab, and all the inhabitants of the desert who clip the hair on their temples. All these nations are uncircumcised, and the whole house of Israel is uncircumcised in heart.’ ”

NLTNew Living Translation
“A time is coming,” says the Lord, “when I will punish all those who are circumcised in body but not in spirit—the Egyptians, Edomites, Ammonites, Moabites, the people who live in the desert in remote places, and yes, even the people of Judah. And like all these pagan nations, the people of Israel also have uncircumcised hearts.”

“Look, days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “and I will call into account all those who are circumcised in the foreskin: Egypt, Judah, and Edom, and the Ammonites, and Moab, and all those who are trimmed to the side, those who live in the desert, for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised of heart.”

KJV 1900King James Version
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord,
That I will punish all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised;
Egypt, and Judah, and Edom, and the children of Ammon, and Moab,
And all that are in the utmost corners, that dwell in the wilderness:
For all these nations are uncircumcised,
And all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart.
