A Promise of Hope for Israel
46:2752 “You descendants of Jacob, my servants,53 do not be afraid;
do not be terrified, people of Israel.
For I will rescue you and your descendants
from the faraway lands where you are captives.54
The descendants of Jacob will return to their land and enjoy peace.
They will be secure and no one will terrify them.
46:28I, the Lord, tell55 you not to be afraid,
you descendants of Jacob, my servant,
for I am with you.
Though I completely destroy all the nations where I scatter you,
I will not completely destroy you.
I will indeed discipline you but only in due measure.
I will not allow you to go entirely unpunished.”56
Footnotes
- 52 Jer 46:27–28 are virtually the same as 30:10–11. The verses are more closely related to that context than to this. But the presence of a note of future hope for the Egyptians may have led to a note of encouragement also to the Judeans who were under threat of judgment at the same time (cf. the study notes on , 13 and 25:1–2 for the possible relative dating of these prophecies).
- 53 Heb “And/But you do not be afraid, my servant Jacob.” Here and elsewhere in the verse the terms Jacob and Israel are poetic for the people of Israel descended from the patriarch Jacob. The terms have been supplied throughout with plural referents for greater clarity.
- 54 Heb “For I will rescue you from far away, your descendants from the land of their captivity.”
- 55 Heb “Oracle of the Lord.” Again the first person is adopted because the Lord is speaking and the indirect quotation is used to avoid an embedded quotation with quotation marks on either side.
- 56 The translation “entirely unpunished” is intended to reflect the emphatic construction of the infinitive absolute before the finite verb.

“But fear not, O Jacob my servant,
nor be dismayed, O Israel,
for behold, I will save you from far away,
and your offspring from the land of their captivity.
Jacob shall return and have quiet and ease,
and none shall make him afraid.
Fear not, O Jacob my servant,
declares the Lord,
for I am with you.
I will make a full end of all the nations
to which I have driven you,
but of you I will not make a full end.
I will discipline you in just measure,
and I will by no means leave you unpunished.”

“Do not be afraid, Jacob my servant;
do not be dismayed, Israel.
I will surely save you out of a distant place,
your descendants from the land of their exile.
Jacob will again have peace and security,
and no one will make him afraid.
Do not be afraid, Jacob my servant,
for I am with you,” declares the Lord.

CSBChristian Standard Bible
But you, my servant Jacob, do not be afraid,
and do not be discouraged, Israel,
for without fail I will save you from far away,
and your descendants from the land of their captivity!
Jacob will return and have calm and quiet
with no one to frighten him.
And you, my servant Jacob, do not be afraid—
this is the Lord’s declaration—
for I will be with you.
I will bring destruction on all the nations
where I have banished you,
but I will not bring destruction on you.
I will discipline you with justice,
and I will by no means leave you unpunished.

NLTNew Living Translation
“But do not be afraid, Jacob, my servant;
do not be dismayed, Israel.
For I will bring you home again from distant lands,
and your children will return from their exile.
Israel will return to a life of peace and quiet,
and no one will terrorize them.
Do not be afraid, Jacob, my servant,
for I am with you,” says the Lord.
“I will completely destroy the nations to which I have exiled you,
but I will not completely destroy you.
I will discipline you, but with justice;
I cannot let you go unpunished.”

LEBThe Lexham English Bible
“But as for you, my servant Jacob, you must not be afraid,
and Israel, you must not be dismayed,
for look, I am going to save you from far,
and your offspring from the land of their captivity.
And Jacob will return,
and he will be quiet,
and he will be at ease,
and without one who makes him afraid.
You must not be afraid, my servant Jacob,” declares Yahweh,
“for I am with you.
For I will make a complete destruction in all the nations where I scattered you,
but you I will not make a complete destruction,
though I will chastise you to the measure,
and I will certainly not leave you unpunished.”

KJV 1900King James Version
But fear not thou, O my servant Jacob,
And be not dismayed, O Israel:
For, behold, I will save thee from afar off,
And thy seed from the land of their captivity;
And Jacob shall return, and be in rest and at ease,
And none shall make him afraid.
Fear thou not, O Jacob my servant,
Saith the Lord: for I am with thee;
For I will make a full end of all the nations whither I have driven thee:
But I will not make a full end of thee,
But correct thee in measure;
Yet will I not leave thee wholly unpunished.
