23:19But just watch!61 The wrath of the Lord

will come like a storm!62

Like a raging storm it will rage down63

on the heads of those who are wicked.

23:20The anger of the Lord will not turn back

until he has fully carried out his intended purposes.64

In days to come65

you people will come to understand this clearly.66

23:21I did not send those prophets.

Yet they were in a hurry to give their message.67

I did not tell them anything.

Yet they prophesied anyway.

23:22But if they had stood in my inner circle,68

they would have proclaimed my message to my people.

They would have caused my people to turn from their wicked ways

and stop doing the evil things they are doing.

Footnotes

  1. 61 Heb “Behold!”
  2. 62 The syntax of this line has generally been misunderstood, sometimes to the point that some want to delete the word wrath. Both here and in 30:23 where these same words occur the word “anger” stands not as an accusative of attendant circumstance but an apposition, giving the intended referent to the figure. Comparison should be made with Jer 25:15 where “this wrath” is appositional to “the cup of wine” (cf. §131.k).
  3. 63 The translation is deliberate, intending to reflect the repetition of the Hebrew root which is “swirl/swirling.”
  4. 64 Heb “until he has done and until he has carried out the purposes of his heart.”
  5. 65 Heb “in the latter days.” However, as 31 אַחֲרִית b suggests, the meaning of this idiom must be determined from the context. Sometimes it has remote, even eschatological, reference and other times it has more immediate reference as it does here and in Jer 30:23 where it refers to the coming days of Babylonian conquest and exile.
  6. 66 The translation is intended to reflect a Hebrew construction where a noun functions as the object of a verb from the same root word (the Hebrew cognate accusative).
  7. 67 Heb “Yet they ran.” The image is that of a messenger bearing news from the king. See 2 Sam 18:19–24; Jer 51:31; Isa 40:9; 52:7; Hab 2:2 (the tablet/scroll bore the message the runner was to read to the intended recipients of his message). Their message has been given in v. 17 (see notes there for cross references).
  8. 68 Or “had been my confidant.” See the note on v. .

ESVEnglish Standard Version

Behold, the storm of the Lord!

Wrath has gone forth,

a whirling tempest;

it will burst upon the head of the wicked.

The anger of the Lord will not turn back

until he has executed and accomplished

the intents of his heart.

In the latter days you will understand it clearly.

“I did not send the prophets,

yet they ran;

I did not speak to them,

yet they prophesied.

But if they had stood in my council,

then they would have proclaimed my words to my people,

and they would have turned them from their evil way,

and from the evil of their deeds.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

See, the storm of the Lord

will burst out in wrath,

a whirlwind swirling down

on the heads of the wicked.

The anger of the Lord will not turn back

until he fully accomplishes

the purposes of his heart.

In days to come

you will understand it clearly.

I did not send these prophets,

yet they have run with their message;

I did not speak to them,

yet they have prophesied.

But if they had stood in my council,

they would have proclaimed my words to my people

and would have turned them from their evil ways

and from their evil deeds.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Look, a storm from the Lord!

Wrath has gone out,

a whirling storm.

It will whirl about the heads of the wicked.

The Lord’s anger will not turn away

until he has completely fulfilled the purposes of his heart.

In time to come you will understand it clearly.

I did not send out these prophets,

yet they ran.

I did not speak to them,

yet they prophesied.

If they had really stood in my council,

they would have enabled my people to hear my words

and would have turned them from their evil ways

and their evil deeds.

NLTNew Living Translation

Look! The Lord’s anger bursts out like a storm,

a whirlwind that swirls down on the heads of the wicked.

The anger of the Lord will not diminish

until it has finished all he has planned.

In the days to come

you will understand all this very clearly.

“I have not sent these prophets,

yet they run around claiming to speak for me.

I have given them no message,

yet they go on prophesying.

If they had stood before me and listened to me,

they would have spoken my words,

and they would have turned my people

from their evil ways and deeds.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Look, the storm of Yahweh has gone forth in wrath,

even a whirling tempest.

It will whirl upon the head of the wicked.

The anger of Yahweh will not turn back

until his doing and until his keeping the plans of his mind.

In latter days you will look closely at it with understanding.

I have not sent the prophets, yet they ran.

I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.

But if they had stood in my council,

then they would have proclaimed my words to my people,

and they would have caused them to turn from their evil way,

and from the evil of their deeds.

KJV 1900King James Version

Behold, a whirlwind of the Lord is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked. The anger of the Lord shall not return, until he have executed, and till he have performed the thoughts of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly. I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings.
