2:21I planted you in the land
like a special vine of the very best stock.
Why in the world have you turned into something like a wild vine
that produces rotten, foul-smelling grapes?53
2:22You can try to wash away your guilt with a strong detergent.
You can use as much soap as you want.
But the stain of your guilt is still there for me to see,”54
says the Lord God.55
Footnotes
- 53 Heb “I planted you as a choice vine, all of it true seed. How then have you turned into a putrid thing to me, a strange [or wild] vine.” The question expresses surprise and consternation. The translation is based on a redivision of the Hebrew words סוּרֵי הַגֶּפֶן (sure haggefen) into סוֹרִיָּה גֶּפֶן (soriyyah gefen) and the recognition of a סוֹרִיָּה (soriyyah) meaning “putrid, stinking thing.” See סוֹרִי.
- 54 Heb “Even if you wash with natron/lye, and use much soap, your sin is a stain before me.”
- 55 Heb “Lord Yahweh.” For an explanation of this title see the study notes on .

Yet I planted you a choice vine,
wholly of pure seed.
How then have you turned degenerate
and become a wild vine?
Though you wash yourself with lye
and use much soap,
the stain of your guilt is still before me,
declares the Lord God.

NIVNew International Version (2011)
I had planted you like a choice vine
of sound and reliable stock.
How then did you turn against me
into a corrupt, wild vine?
Although you wash yourself with soap
and use an abundance of cleansing powder,
the stain of your guilt is still before me,”
declares the Sovereign Lord.

I planted you, a choice vine
from the very best seed.
How then could you turn into
a degenerate, foreign vine?
Even if you wash with lye
and use a great amount of bleach,
the stain of your iniquity is still in front of me.
This is the Lord God’s declaration.

But I was the one who planted you,
choosing a vine of the purest stock—the very best.
How did you grow into this corrupt wild vine?
No amount of soap or lye can make you clean.
I still see the stain of your guilt.
I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken!

Yet I planted you as a choice vine,
all of it a seed of trustworthiness.
How then have you altered before me
into something that is degenerate, the foreign vine?
For if you wash with natron,
and you use much soap,
your guilt is sticking as a stain before me,”
declares the Lord Yahweh.

Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me? For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord God.
