64:7No one invokes13 your name,
or makes an effort14 to take hold of you.
For you have rejected us15
and handed us over to our own sins.16
64:8Yet,17 Lord, you are our father.
We are the clay, and you are our potter;
we are all the product of your labor.18
64:9Lord, do not be too angry!
Do not hold our sins against us continually!19
Take a good look at your people, at all of us!20
Footnotes
- 13 Or “calls out in”; , , “calls on.”
- 14 Or “rouses himself”; “arouses himself.”
- 15 Heb “for you have hidden your face from us.”
- 16 The Hebrew text reads literally, “and you caused us to melt in the hand of our sin.” The verb וַתְּמוּגֵנוּ (vattémugenu) is a Qal preterite 2nd person masculine singular with a 1st person common plural suffix from the root מוּג (mug, “melt”). However, elsewhere the Qal of this verb is intransitive. If the verbal root מוּג (mug) is retained here, the form should be emended to a Polel pattern (וַתְּמֹגְגֵנוּ, vattémogégenu). The translation assumes an emendation to וַתְּמַגְּנֵנוּ (vattémaggénenu, “and you handed us over”). This form is a Piel preterite 2nd person masculine singular with a 1st person common plural suffix from the verbal root מִגֵּן (miggen, “hand over, surrender”; see מגן and 171 מָגָן). The point is that God has abandoned them to their sinful ways and no longer seeks reconciliation.
- 17 On the force of וְעַתָּה (vé’attah) here, see עַתָּה.
- 18 Heb “the work of your hand.”
- 19 Heb “do not remember sin continually.”
- 20 Heb “Look, gaze at your people, all of us.” Another option is to translate, “Take a good look! We are all your people.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version
There is no one who calls upon your name,
who rouses himself to take hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us,
and have made us melt in the hand of our iniquities.
But now, O Lord, you are our Father;
we are the clay, and you are our potter;
we are all the work of your hand.
Be not so terribly angry, O Lord,
and remember not iniquity forever.
Behold, please look, we are all your people.

No one calls on your name
or strives to lay hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us
and have given us over to our sins.
Yet you, Lord, are our Father.
We are the clay, you are the potter;
we are all the work of your hand.
Do not be angry beyond measure, Lord;
do not remember our sins forever.
Oh, look on us, we pray,
for we are all your people.

Yet no one calls on your name
or pleads with you for mercy.
Therefore, you have turned away from us
and turned us over to our sins.
And yet, O Lord, you are our Father.
We are the clay, and you are the potter.
We all are formed by your hand.
Don’t be so angry with us, Lord.
Please don’t remember our sins forever.
Look at us, we pray,
and see that we are all your people.

And there is no one who calls on your name,
who pulls himself up to keep hold of you,
for you have hidden your face from us,
and melted us into the hand of our iniquity.
Yet now Yahweh, you are our father;
we are the clay and you are our potter,
and we all are the work of your hand.
You must not be exceedingly angry, Yahweh,
and you must not remember iniquity forever!
Look! Behold, now! We all are your people!

KJV 1900King James Version
And there is none that calleth upon thy name,
That stirreth up himself to take hold of thee:
For thou hast hid thy face from us,
And hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.
But now, O Lord, thou art our father;
We are the clay, and thou our potter;
And we all are the work of thy hand.
Be not wroth very sore, O Lord,
Neither remember iniquity for ever:
Behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people.
