57:3But approach, you sons of omen readers,

you offspring of adulteresses and prostitutes!11

57:4At whom are you laughing?

At whom are you opening your mouth

and sticking out your tongue?

You are the children of rebels,

the offspring of liars,12

57:5you who practice ritual sex13 under the oaks and every green tree,

who slaughter children near the streams under the rocky overhangs.14

57:6Among the smooth stones of the stream are the idols you love;

they, they are the object of your devotion.15

You pour out liquid offerings to them,

you make an offering.

Because of these things I will seek vengeance.16

Footnotes

  1. 11 The Hebrew text reads literally, “offspring of an adulterer [masculine] and [one who] has committed adultery.” Perhaps the text has suffered from transposition of vav (ו) and tav (ת) and מְנָאֵף וַתִּזְנֶה (ména’ef vattizneh) should be emended to מְנָאֶפֶת וְזֹנָה (ména’efet vézonah, “an adulteress and a prostitute”). Both singular nouns would be understood in a collective sense. Most modern English versions render both forms as nouns.
  2. 12 Heb “Are you not children of rebellion, offspring of a lie?” The rhetorical question anticipates the answer, “Of course you are!”
  3. 13 Heb “inflame yourselves”; “burn with lust.” This verse alludes to the practice of ritual sex that accompanied pagan fertility rites.
  4. 14 This apparently alludes to the practice of child sacrifice (cf. , , ).
  5. 15 Heb “among the smooth stones of the stream [is] your portion, they, they [are] your lot.” The next line indicates idols are in view.
  6. 16 The text reads literally, “Because of these am I relenting?” If the prefixed interrogative particle is retained at the beginning of the sentence, then the question would be rhetorical, with the Niphal of נָחָם (nakham) probably being used in the sense of “relent, change one’s mind.” One could translate: “Because of these things, how can I relent?” However, the initial letter he may be dittographic (note the final he [ה] on the preceding word). In this case one may understand the verb in the sense of “console oneself, seek vengeance,” as in 1:24.

But you, draw near,

sons of the sorceress,

offspring of the adulterer and the loose woman.

Whom are you mocking?

Against whom do you open your mouth wide

and stick out your tongue?

Are you not children of transgression,

the offspring of deceit,

you who burn with lust among the oaks,

under every green tree,

who slaughter your children in the valleys,

under the clefts of the rocks?

Among the smooth stones of the valley is your portion;

they, they, are your lot;

to them you have poured out a drink offering,

you have brought a grain offering.

Shall I relent for these things?

NIVNew International Version (2011)

“But you—come here, you children of a sorceress,

you offspring of adulterers and prostitutes!

Who are you mocking?

At whom do you sneer

and stick out your tongue?

Are you not a brood of rebels,

the offspring of liars?

You burn with lust among the oaks

and under every spreading tree;

you sacrifice your children in the ravines

and under the overhanging crags.

The idols among the smooth stones of the ravines are your portion;

indeed, they are your lot.

Yes, to them you have poured out drink offerings

and offered grain offerings.

In view of all this, should I relent?

CSBChristian Standard Bible

But come here,

you witch’s sons,

offspring of an adulterer and a prostitute!

Who are you mocking?

Who are you opening your mouth

and sticking out your tongue at?

Isn’t it you, you rebellious children,

you offspring of liars,

who burn with lust among the oaks,

under every green tree,

who slaughter children in the wadis

below the clefts of the rocks?

Your portion is among the smooth stones of the wadi;

indeed, they are your lot.

You have even poured out a drink offering to them;

you have offered a grain offering;

should I be satisfied with these?

NLTNew Living Translation

“But you—come here, you witches’ children,

you offspring of adulterers and prostitutes!

Whom do you mock,

making faces and sticking out your tongues?

You children of sinners and liars!

You worship your idols with great passion

beneath the oaks and under every green tree.

You sacrifice your children down in the valleys,

among the jagged rocks in the cliffs.

Your gods are the smooth stones in the valleys.

You worship them with liquid offerings and grain offerings.

They, not I, are your inheritance.

Do you think all this makes me happy?

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

“But you, come near here, you children of a soothsayer,

offspring of an adulterer and she who commits fornication.

At whom do you make fun?

At whom do you open your mouth and stick out your tongue?

Are you not children of transgression,

offspring of deception,

who burn with lust among the oaks,

under every leafy tree,

who slaughter children in the valleys,

under the clefts of the rocks?

Your portion is among the smooth stones of the valley;

they, they are your lot;

indeed, to them you have poured out a drink offering,

you have brought a food offering.

Shall I relent concerning these things?

KJV 1900King James Version

But draw near hither, ye sons of the sorceress,

The seed of the adulterer and the whore.

Against whom do ye sport yourselves?

Against whom make ye a wide mouth, and draw out the tongue?

Are ye not children of transgression, a seed of falsehood,

Enflaming yourselves with idols under every green tree,

Slaying the children in the valleys under the clifts of the rocks?

Among the smooth stones of the stream is thy portion;

They, they are thy lot:

Even to them hast thou poured a drink offering,

Thou hast offered a meat offering.

Should I receive comfort in these?
