The Lord Denounces Israel’s Paganism

56:9All you wild animals in the fields, come and devour,

all you wild animals in the forest!

56:10All their watchmen16 are blind,

they are unaware.17

All of them are like mute dogs,

unable to bark.

They pant,18 lie down,

and love to snooze.

56:11The dogs have big appetites;

they are never full.19

They are shepherds who have no understanding;

they all go their own way,

each one looking for monetary gain.20

56:12Each one says,21

‘Come on, I’ll get some wine!

Let’s guzzle some beer!

Tomorrow will be just like today!

We’ll have everything we want!’22

Footnotes

  1. 16 The “watchmen” are probably spiritual leaders, most likely prophets and priests, responsible for giving the people moral direction.
  2. 17 Heb “they do not know”; “they are all ignorant”; “they all lack knowledge.”
  3. 18 The Hebrew text has הֹזִים (hozim), which appears to be derived from an otherwise unattested verbal root הָזָה (hazah). On the basis of alleged cognates, 223 הָזָה offers the definition “dream, rave” while הזה lists “pant.” In this case the dog metaphor of the preceding lines continues. The reference to dogs at the beginning of v. 11 favors the extension of the metaphor. The Qumran scroll 1QIsaa has חזים (“seers”) here. In this case the “watchmen” are directly identified as prophets and depicted as lazy.
  4. 19 The phrase never full alludes to the greed of the leaders.
  5. 20 Heb “for his gain from his end.”
  6. 21 The words “each one says” are supplied in the translation for clarification.
  7. 22 Heb “great, [in] abundance, very much,” i.e., “very great indeed.” See יֶתֶר.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

All you beasts of the field, come to devour—

all you beasts in the forest.

His watchmen are blind;

they are all without knowledge;

they are all silent dogs;

they cannot bark,

dreaming, lying down,

loving to slumber.

The dogs have a mighty appetite;

they never have enough.

But they are shepherds who have no understanding;

they have all turned to their own way,

each to his own gain, one and all.

“Come,” they say, “let me get wine;

let us fill ourselves with strong drink;

and tomorrow will be like this day,

great beyond measure.”

NIVNew International Version (2011)

Come, all you beasts of the field,

come and devour, all you beasts of the forest!

Israel’s watchmen are blind,

they all lack knowledge;

they are all mute dogs,

they cannot bark;

they lie around and dream,

they love to sleep.

They are dogs with mighty appetites;

they never have enough.

They are shepherds who lack understanding;

they all turn to their own way,

they seek their own gain.

“Come,” each one cries, “let me get wine!

Let us drink our fill of beer!

And tomorrow will be like today,

or even far better.”

CSBChristian Standard Bible

All you animals of the field and forest,

come and eat!

Israel’s watchmen are blind, all of them,

they know nothing;

all of them are mute dogs,

they cannot bark;

they dream, lie down,

and love to sleep.

These dogs have fierce appetites;

they never have enough.

And they are shepherds

who have no discernment;

all of them turn to their own way,

every last one for his own profit.

“Come, let me get some wine,

let’s guzzle some beer;

and tomorrow will be like today,

only far better!”

NLTNew Living Translation

Come, wild animals of the field!

Come, wild animals of the forest!

Come and devour my people!

For the leaders of my people—

the Lord’s watchmen, his shepherds—

are blind and ignorant.

They are like silent watchdogs

that give no warning when danger comes.

They love to lie around, sleeping and dreaming.

Like greedy dogs, they are never satisfied.

They are ignorant shepherds,

all following their own path

and intent on personal gain.

“Come,” they say, “let’s get some wine and have a party.

Let’s all get drunk.

Then tomorrow we’ll do it again

and have an even bigger party!”

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

All wild animals in the field, come,

to devour, all wild animals in the forest!

His watchmen are blind,

none of them know.

They are all dumb dogs;

they are unable to bark,

panting, lying down,

loving to slumber.

And the dogs have a greedy appetite;

they are never satisfied.

And they are the shepherds!

They do not have understanding.

They all turn to their own way,

each one for his own gain, every one of them.

“Come, let me take wine,

and let us carouse with intoxicating drink,

and tomorrow will be like today,

very great indeed.”

KJV 1900King James Version

All ye beasts of the field, come to devour,

Yea, all ye beasts in the forest.

His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant,

They are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark;

Sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber.

Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough,

And they are shepherds that cannot understand:

They all look to their own way,

Every one for his gain, from his quarter.

Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine,

And we will fill ourselves with strong drink;

And to morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.
