Footnotes

  1. 34 Heb “hand,” here a metaphor for the strength or power of the flames.
  2. 35 The Hebrew text reads literally, “there is no coal [for?] their food, light to sit before it.” Some emend לַחְמָם (lakhmam, “their food”) to לְחֻמָּם (lékhummam, “to warm them”; see חמם). This statement may allude to Isa 44:16, where idolaters are depicted warming themselves over a fire made from wood, part of which was used to form idols. The fire of divine judgment will be no such campfire; its flames will devour and destroy.

fire burns them.

they cannot save themselves from the flame.

You will get no help from them at all;

their hearth is no place to sit for warmth.

the fire burns them completely.

They cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame;

there is no coal for warming oneself,

no fire before which to sit.

They shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame:

There shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.
