26:10If the wicked are shown mercy,

they do not learn about justice.16

Even in a land where right is rewarded, they act unjustly;17

they do not see the Lord’s majesty revealed.

26:11O Lord, you are ready to act,18

but they don’t even notice.

They will see and be put to shame by your angry judgment against humankind,19

yes, fire will consume your enemies.20

Footnotes

  1. 16 As in verse 9b, the translation understands צֶדֶק (tsedeq) in the sense of “justice,” but it is possible that it carries the nuance “righteousness,” in which case one might translate, “they do not learn to live in a righteous manner.”
  2. 17 Heb “in a land of uprightness they act unjustly”; “they deal perversely.”
  3. 18 Heb “O Lord, your hand is lifted up.”
  4. 19 Heb “They will see and be ashamed of zeal of people.” Some take the prefixed verbs as jussives and translate the statement as a prayer, “Let them see and be put to shame.” The meaning of the phrase קִנְאַת־עָם (qin’at-’am, “zeal of people”) is unclear. The translation assumes that this refers to God’s angry judgment upon people. Another option is to understand the phrase as referring to God’s zealous, protective love of his covenant people. In this case one might translate, “by your zealous devotion to your people.”
  5. 20 Heb “yes, fire, your enemies, will consume them.” Many understand the prefixed verb form to be jussive and translate, “let [fire] consume” (cf. , , ). The mem suffixed to the verb may be enclitic; if a pronominal suffix, it refers back to “your enemies.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

If favor is shown to the wicked,

he does not learn righteousness;

in the land of uprightness he deals corruptly

and does not see the majesty of the Lord.

O Lord, your hand is lifted up,

but they do not see it.

Let them see your zeal for your people, and be ashamed.

Let the fire for your adversaries consume them.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

But when grace is shown to the wicked,

they do not learn righteousness;

even in a land of uprightness they go on doing evil

and do not regard the majesty of the Lord.

Lord, your hand is lifted high,

but they do not see it.

Let them see your zeal for your people and be put to shame;

let the fire reserved for your enemies consume them.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

But if the wicked man is shown favor,

he does not learn righteousness.

In a righteous land he acts unjustly

and does not see the majesty of the Lord.

Lord, your hand is lifted up to take action,

but they do not see it.

Let them see your zeal for your people

and be put to shame.

Let fire consume your adversaries.

NLTNew Living Translation

Your kindness to the wicked

does not make them do good.

Although others do right, the wicked keep doing wrong

and take no notice of the Lord’s majesty.

O Lord, they pay no attention to your upraised fist.

Show them your eagerness to defend your people.

Then they will be ashamed.

Let your fire consume your enemies.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Though the wicked person is shown compassion, he does not learn righteousness;

he acts unjustly in the land of uprightness,

and he does not see the majesty of Yahweh.

Yahweh, though your hand reaches high, they do not see it.

Let them see, and let them be ashamed of the zeal of people.

Indeed, let the fire of your enemies consume them.

KJV 1900King James Version

Let favour be shewed to the wicked, yet will he not learn righteousness:

In the land of uprightness will he deal unjustly,

And will not behold the majesty of the Lord.

Lord, when thy hand is lifted up, They will not see:

But they shall see, and be ashamed for their envy at the people;

Yea, the fire of thine enemies shall devour them.
