22:16‘What right do you have to be here? What relatives do you have buried here?39

Why40 do you chisel out a tomb for yourself here?

He chisels out his burial site in an elevated place,

he carves out his tomb on a cliff.

22:17Look, the Lord will throw you far away,41 you mere man!42

He will wrap you up tightly.43

22:18He will wind you up tightly into a ball

and throw you into a wide, open land.44

There you will die,

and there with you will be your impressive chariots,45

which bring disgrace to the house of your master.46

Footnotes

  1. 39 Heb “What to you here? And who to you here?” The point of the second question is not entirely clear. The interpretation reflected in the translation is based on the following context, which suggests that Shebna has no right to think of himself so highly and arrange such an extravagant burial place for himself.
  2. 40 Heb “that you chisel out.”
  3. 41 Heb “will throw you with a throwing.”
  4. 42 Heb “O man” (so ); “mortal man”; “my fellow.”
  5. 43 Heb “and the one who wraps you [will] wrap.”
  6. 44 Heb “and he will tightly [or “surely”] wind you [with] winding like a ball, to a land broad of hands [i.e., “sides”].”
  7. 45 Heb “and there the chariots of your splendor.”
  8. 46 Apparently the reference to chariots alludes to Shebna’s excessive pride, which in turn brings disgrace to the royal family.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

What have you to do here, and whom have you here, that you have cut out here a tomb for yourself, you who cut out a tomb on the height and carve a dwelling for yourself in the rock? Behold, the Lord will hurl you away violently, O you strong man. He will seize firm hold on you and whirl you around and around, and throw you like a ball into a wide land. There you shall die, and there shall be your glorious chariots, you shame of your master’s house.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

What are you doing here and who gave you permission

to cut out a grave for yourself here,

hewing your grave on the height

and chiseling your resting place in the rock?

“Beware, the Lord is about to take firm hold of you

and hurl you away, you mighty man.

He will roll you up tightly like a ball

and throw you into a large country.

There you will die

and there the chariots you were so proud of

will become a disgrace to your master’s house.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

What are you doing here? Who authorized you to carve out a tomb for yourself here, carving your tomb on the height and cutting a resting place for yourself out of rock? Look, you strong man! The Lord is about to shake you violently. He will take hold of you, wind you up into a ball, and sling you into a wide land. There you will die, and there your glorious chariots will be—a disgrace to the house of your lord.

NLTNew Living Translation

“Who do you think you are,

and what are you doing here,

building a beautiful tomb for yourself—

a monument high up in the rock?

For the Lord is about to hurl you away, mighty man.

He is going to grab you,

crumple you into a ball,

and toss you away into a distant, barren land.

There you will die,

and your glorious chariots will be broken and useless.

You are a disgrace to your master!

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

‘What business do you have here,

and who do you have here,

that you have cut a grave cutting here for yourself,

carving his grave on the height,

a dwelling place for him in the rock?

Look! Yahweh is about to really hurl you, man!

And he is about to grasp you firmly;

he will wind a winding tightly around you like a ball, to a wide land.

There you shall die,

and there the chariots of your splendor will be,

disgrace to your master’s house!

KJV 1900King James Version

What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here,

That thou hast hewed thee out a sepulchre here,

As he that heweth him out a sepulchre on high,

And that graveth an habitation for himself in a rock?

Behold, the Lord will carry thee away with a mighty captivity,

And will surely cover thee.

He will surely violently turn and toss thee like a ball

Into a large country:

There shalt thou die,

And there the chariots of thy glory

Shall be the shame of thy lord’s house.
