22:12At that time the sovereign master, the Lord who commands armies, called for weeping and mourning,

for shaved heads and sackcloth.32

22:13But look, there is outright celebration!33

You say, “Kill the ox and slaughter the sheep,

eat meat and drink wine.

Eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”34

22:14The Lord who commands armies told me this:35 “Certainly this sin will not be forgiven as long as you live,”36 says the sovereign master, the Lord who commands armies.

Footnotes

  1. 32 Heb “for baldness and the wearing of sackcloth.” See the note at .
  2. 33 Heb “happiness and joy.”
  3. 34 The prophet here quotes what the fatalistic people are saying. The introductory “you say” is supplied in the translation for clarification; the concluding verb “we die” makes it clear the people are speaking. The six verbs translated as imperatives are actually infinitives absolute, functioning here as finite verbs.
  4. 35 Heb “it was revealed in my ears [by?] the Lord who commands armies [traditionally, the Lord of hosts].”
  5. 36 Heb “Certainly this sin will not be atoned for until you die.” This does not imply that their death will bring atonement; rather it emphasizes that their sin is unpardonable. The statement has the form of an oath.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

In that day the Lord God of hosts

called for weeping and mourning,

for baldness and wearing sackcloth;

and behold, joy and gladness,

killing oxen and slaughtering sheep,

eating flesh and drinking wine.

“Let us eat and drink,

for tomorrow we die.”

The Lord of hosts has revealed himself in my ears:

“Surely this iniquity will not be atoned for you until you die,”

says the Lord God of hosts.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

The Lord, the Lord Almighty,

called you on that day

to weep and to wail,

to tear out your hair and put on sackcloth.

But see, there is joy and revelry,

slaughtering of cattle and killing of sheep,

eating of meat and drinking of wine!

“Let us eat and drink,” you say,

“for tomorrow we die!”

The Lord Almighty has revealed this in my hearing: “Till your dying day this sin will not be atoned for,” says the Lord, the Lord Almighty.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

On that day the Lord God of Armies

called for weeping, for wailing, for shaven heads,

and for the wearing of sackcloth.

But look: joy and gladness,

butchering of cattle, slaughtering of sheep and goats,

eating of meat, and drinking of wine—

“Let’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

The Lord of Armies has directly revealed to me:

“This iniquity will not be wiped out for you people as long as you live.”

The Lord God of Armies has spoken.

NLTNew Living Translation

At that time the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies,

called you to weep and mourn.

He told you to shave your heads in sorrow for your sins

and to wear clothes of burlap to show your remorse.

But instead, you dance and play;

you slaughter cattle and kill sheep.

You feast on meat and drink wine.

You say, “Let’s feast and drink,

for tomorrow we die!”

The Lord of Heaven’s Armies has revealed this to me: “Till the day you die, you will never be forgiven for this sin.” That is the judgment of the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

And the Lord, Yahweh of hosts, called on that day

for weeping and mourning,

and for baldness and girding with sackcloth.

But look! Joy and gladness,

the killing of oxen and the slaughtering of sheep,

the eating of meat and the drinking of wine!

“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!”

And it was revealed in my ears by Yahweh of hosts:

“Surely this sin will not be atoned for you until you die!”

says the Lord, Yahweh of hosts.

KJV 1900King James Version

And in that day did the Lord God of hosts call to weeping, and to mourning,

And to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth:

And behold joy and gladness,

Slaying oxen, and killing sheep,

Eating flesh, and drinking wine:

Let us eat and drink; for to morrow we shall die.

And it was revealed in mine ears by the Lord of hosts,

Surely this iniquity shall not be purged from you till ye die,

Saith the Lord God of hosts.
