Footnotes

  1. 2 Or “salvation” (, , ).
  2. 3 The words “in him” are supplied in the translation for clarification.
  3. 4 The Hebrew text has, “for my strength and protection [is] the Lord, the Lord (Heb “Yah, Yahweh).” The word יְהוָה (yehvah) is probably dittographic or explanatory here (note that the short form of the name [יָהּ, yah] precedes, and that the graphically similar וַיְהִי [vayéhi] follows). Exod 15:2, the passage from which the words of v. 2b are taken, has only יָהּ. The word זִמְרָת (zimrat) is traditionally understood as meaning “song,” in which case one might translate, “for the Lord gives me strength and joy” (i.e., a reason to sing); note that in v. 5 the verb זָמַר (zamar, “sing”) appears. Many recent commentators, however, have argued that the noun is here instead a homonym, meaning “protection” or “strength.” See III *זמר.
  4. 5 Or “salvation” (so many English versions, e.g., , , , ); “my savior.”
  5. 6 Or “salvation” (so many English versions, e.g., , , , , ); “victory.” Water is here a metaphor for renewed life; the springs symbolize the restoration of God’s favor.
  6. 7 Or “in that day” ().
  7. 8 Heb “call in his name,” i.e., “invoke his name.”
  8. 9 Heb “bring to remembrance that his name is exalted.” The Lord’s “name” stands here for his character and reputation.
  9. 10 The translation follows the marginal reading (Qere), which is a Hophal participle from יָדַע (yada’), understood here in a gerundive sense.
  10. 11 See the note on the phrase “the Holy One of Israel” in .
  11. 12 Or “is great” (). However, the context emphasizes his mighty acts of deliverance (cf. ), not some general or vague character quality.

For the Lord JEHOVAH is my strength and my song;

He also is become my salvation.

Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.

And in that day shall ye say,

Praise the Lord, call upon his name,

Declare his doings among the people,

Make mention that his name is exalted.

This is known in all the earth.

Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion:

For great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.
