Footnotes

  1. 11 Heb “sons of Israel” (so ); “children of Israel”; “people of Israel” (likewise in the following verse).
  2. 12 Heb “David their king”; cf. “the king from David’s family”; “a descendant of David their king”; “David’s descendant, their king.” It is not clear whether Hosea was predicting a restoration of Davidic kingship over Israel and Judah (e.g., Jer 17:25; 22:2) or referring to the ultimate Davidic king, namely, the Messiah, who will fulfill the conditions of the Davidic covenant and inaugurate/fulfill the blessings of the Davidic covenant for Israel. The Messiah is frequently pictured as the “New David” because he would fulfill the ideals of the Davidic covenant and be everything that David and his descendants were commissioned to be (e.g., Isa 9:7[6]; 16:5; Jer 23:5–6; 30:9; 33:15–16; Ezek 34:23–24; 37:24–25).
  3. 13 Heb “his goodness”; “his good gifts.”
  4. 14 Heb “in the end of the days.” Cf. , , , , “in the last days.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

For the children of Israel shall dwell many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or pillar, without ephod or household gods. NIVNew International Version (2011)

For the Israelites will live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred stones, without ephod or household gods. Afterward the Israelites will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They will come trembling to the Lord and to his blessings in the last days.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

For the Israelites must live many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred pillar, and without ephod or household idols. Afterward, the people of Israel will return and seek the Lord their God and David their king. They will come with awe to the Lord and to his goodness in the last days.

NLTNew Living Translation

This shows that Israel will go a long time without a king or prince, and without sacrifices, sacred pillars, priests, or even idols! But afterward the people will return and devote themselves to the Lord their God and to David’s descendant, their king. In the last days, they will tremble in awe of the Lord and of his goodness.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

The children of Israel will remain for many days

without a king and prince,

without sacrifice and stone pillar, ephod and teraphim.

Afterward the children of Israel will return

and seek Yahweh their God and David their king.

They will come in fear to Yahweh

and to his goodness at the end of days.

KJV 1900King James Version

For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim: Afterward shall the children of Israel return, and seek the Lord their God, and David their king; and shall fear the Lord and his goodness in the latter days.
