Exposition of Psalm 8: Jesus and the Destiny of Humanity
2:5For he did not put the world to come,5 about which we are speaking,6 under the control of angels. 2:6Instead someone testified somewhere:
“What is man that you think of him7 or the son of man that you care for him?
2:7You made him lower than the angels for a little while.
You crowned him with glory and honor.8
2:8You put all things under his control.”9
For when he put all things under his control, he left nothing outside of his control. At present we do not yet see all things under his control,10
Footnotes
- 5 The phrase the world to come means “the coming inhabited earth,” using the Greek term which describes the world of people and their civilizations.
- 6 See the previous reference to the world in .
- 7 Grk “remember him.”
- 8 Several witnesses, many of them early and important (א A C D* P Ψ 0243 0278 33 1739 1881 lat co), have at the end of v 7, “You have given him dominion over the works of your hands.” Other , not quite as impressive in weight, lack the words (𝔓46 B D2 𝔐). In spite of the impressive external evidence for the longer reading, it is most likely a scribal addition to conform the text of Hebrews to Ps 8:6 (8:7 ). Conformity of a NT quotation of the OT to the was a routine scribal activity, and can hardly be in doubt here as to the cause of the longer reading.
- 9 Grk “you subjected all things under his feet.” A quotation from Ps 8:4–6.
- 10 The expression all things under his control occurs three times in 2:8. The latter two occurrences are not exactly identical to the Greek text of Ps 8:6 quoted at the beginning of the verse, but have been adapted by the writer of Hebrews to fit his argument.

ESVEnglish Standard Version
For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. It has been testified somewhere,
“What is man, that you are mindful of him,
or the son of man, that you care for him?
You made him for a little while lower than the angels;
you have crowned him with glory and honor,
putting everything in subjection under his feet.”
Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him.

It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. But there is a place where someone has testified:
“What is mankind that you are mindful of them,
a son of man that you care for him?
You made them a little lower than the angels;
you crowned them with glory and honor
and put everything under their feet.”
In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them.

For he has not subjected to angels the world to come that we are talking about. But someone somewhere has testified:
What is man that you remember him,
or the son of man that you care for him?
You made him lower than the angels
for a short time;
you crowned him with glory and honor
and subjected everything under his feet.
For in subjecting everything to him, he left nothing that is not subject to him. As it is, we do not yet see everything subjected to him.

And furthermore, it is not angels who will control the future world we are talking about. For in one place the Scriptures say,
“What are mere mortals that you should think about them,
or a son of man that you should care for him?
Yet for a little while you made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You gave them authority over all things.”
Now when it says “all things,” it means nothing is left out. But we have not yet seen all things put under their authority.

For unto the angels hath he not put in subjection the world to come, whereof we speak. But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him? Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands: Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.
