Footnotes

  1. 31 Although the normal meaning for παρέρχομαι (parerchomai) is “pass by, go by,” it would be difficult to get to Troas from where Paul and his companions were without going through rather than around Mysia. παρέρχομαι 6as list some nonbiblical examples of the meaning “go through, pass through,” and give that meaning for the usage here.
  2. 32 Mysia was a province in northwest Asia Minor.
  3. 33 Troas was a port city (and surrounding region) on the northwest coast of Asia Minor, near ancient Troy.
  4. 34 Grk “And a.” Because of the difference between Greek style, which often begins sentences or clauses with “and,” and English style, which generally does not, καί (kai) has not been translated here.
  5. 35 The word “there” is not in the Greek text, but is implied.
  6. 36 The participle λέγων (legōn) is redundant and has not been translated.
  7. 37 Grk “Coming over.” The participle διαβάς (diabas) has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.
  8. 38 Macedonia was the Roman province of Macedonia in Greece.
  9. 39 Grk “he”; the referent (Paul) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
  10. 40 Grk “sought.”
  11. 41 Macedonia was the Roman province of Macedonia in Greece.
  12. 42 Or “summoned.”
  13. 43 ἀνάγω 4, “as a nautical t.t. (ἀ. τὴν ναῦν put a ship to sea), mid. or pass. ἀνάγεσθαι to begin to go by boat, put out to sea.”
  14. 44 Troas was a port city (and surrounding region) on the northwest coast of Asia Minor. See v. 8.
  15. 45 εὐθυδρομέω has “of a ship run a straight course” here; L&N 54.3 has “to sail a straight course, sail straight to.”
  16. 46 Samothrace is an island in the northern part of the Aegean Sea.
  17. 47 Neapolis was a seaport on the southern coast of Macedonia. It was 10 mi (16 km) from Philippi.

ESVEnglish Standard Version

So, passing by Mysia, they went down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night: a man of Macedonia was standing there, urging him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” And when Paul had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go on into Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

So, setting sail from Troas, we made a direct voyage to Samothrace, and the following day to Neapolis,

NIVNew International Version (2011)

So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas. During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, and the next day we went on to Neapolis.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

Passing by Mysia they went down to Troas. During the night Paul had a vision in which a Macedonian man was standing and pleading with him, “Cross over to Macedonia and help us!” After he had seen the vision, we immediately made efforts to set out for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.

From Troas we put out to sea and sailed straight for Samothrace, the next day to Neapolis,

NLTNew Living Translation

So instead, they went on through Mysia to the seaport of Troas.

That night Paul had a vision: A man from Macedonia in northern Greece was standing there, pleading with him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us!” So we decided to leave for Macedonia at once, having concluded that God was calling us to preach the Good News there.

We boarded a boat at Troas and sailed straight across to the island of Samothrace, and the next day we landed at Neapolis.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

So going through Mysia, they went down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul during the night: a certain Macedonian man was standing there and imploring him and saying, “Come over to Macedonia and help us!” And when he had seen the vision, we wanted at once to go away to Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them.

So putting out to sea from Troas, we sailed a straight course to Samothrace, and on the following day to Neapolis,

KJV 1900King James Version

And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us. And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them. Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis;
