Zechariah’s Reign over Israel

15:8In the thirty-eighth year of King Azariah’s reign over Judah, Jeroboam’s son Zechariah became king over Israel. He reigned in Samaria8 for six months. 15:9He did evil in the sight of9 the Lord, as his ancestors had done. He did not repudiate10 the sinful ways of Jeroboam son of Nebat who encouraged Israel to sin. 15:10Shallum son of Jabesh conspired against him; he assassinated him in Ibleam11 and took his place as king. 15:11The rest of the events of Zechariah’s reign are recorded in the scroll called the Annals of the Kings of Israel.1215:12His assassination brought to fulfillment the Lord’s word to Jehu,13 “Four generations of your descendants will rule over Israel.”14 That is exactly what happened.15

  2. 9 Heb “in the eyes of.”
  3. 10 Heb “turn away from.”
  4. 11 The reads, “and he struck him down before the people and killed him” (cf. , , , , , ). However, the reading קָבָל עָם (qaval ’am), “before the people,” is problematic to some because קָבָל is a relatively late Aramaic term. Nevertheless, the Aramaic term qobel certainly antedates the writing of Kings. The bigger problem seems to be the unnecessary intrusion of an Aramaic word at all here. Most interpreters prefer to follow Lucian’s Greek version and read “in Ibleam” (בְיִבְלְעָם, béivle’am). Cf. , .
  5. 12 Heb “As for the rest of the events of Jeroboam, look, they are written on the scroll of the events of the days of the kings of Israel.”
  6. 13 Heb “It was the word of the Lord which he spoke to Jehu, saying.”
  7. 14 “sons of four generations will sit for you on the throne of Israel.” See the note at .
  8. 15 Heb “and it was so.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah king of Judah, Zechariah the son of Jeroboam reigned over Israel in Samaria six months. And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, as his fathers had done. He did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin. Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him and struck him down at Ibleam and put him to death and reigned in his place. Now the rest of the deeds of Zechariah, behold, they are written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel. (This was the promise of the Lord that he gave to Jehu, “Your sons shall sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.” And so it came to pass.)

NIVNew International Version (2011)

In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah king of Judah, Zechariah son of Jeroboam became king of Israel in Samaria, and he reigned six months. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, as his predecessors had done. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit.

Shallum son of Jabesh conspired against Zechariah. He attacked him in front of the people, assassinated him and succeeded him as king. The other events of Zechariah’s reign are written in the book of the annals of the kings of Israel. So the word of the Lord spoken to Jehu was fulfilled: “Your descendants will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.”

CSBChristian Standard Bible

In the thirty-eighth year of Judah’s King Azariah, Zechariah son of Jeroboam reigned over Israel in Samaria for six months. He did what was evil in the Lord’s sight as his predecessors had done. He did not turn away from the sins Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit.

Shallum son of Jabesh conspired against Zechariah. He struck him down publicly, killed him, and became king in his place. As for the rest of the events of Zechariah’s reign, they are written in the Historical Record of Israel’s Kings. The word of the Lord that he spoke to Jehu was, “Four generations of your sons will sit on the throne of Israel,” and it was so.

NLTNew Living Translation

Zechariah son of Jeroboam II began to rule over Israel in the thirty-eighth year of King Uzziah’s reign in Judah. He reigned in Samaria six months. Zechariah did what was evil in the Lord’s sight, as his ancestors had done. He refused to turn from the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had led Israel to commit. Then Shallum son of Jabesh conspired against Zechariah, assassinated him in public, and became the next king.

The rest of the events in Zechariah’s reign are recorded in The Book of the History of the Kings of Israel. So the Lord’s message to Jehu came true: “Your descendants will be kings of Israel down to the fourth generation.”

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah king of Judah, Zechariah the son of Jeroboam reigned over Israel in Samaria for six months. He did evil in the eyes of Yahweh as his ancestors had done. He did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat which he caused Israel to sin. Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him, struck him in front of the people, killed him, and reigned in his place. Now the remainder of the acts of Zechariah, look, they are written on the scroll of the events of the days of the kings of Israel. This is the word of Yahweh that he spoke to Jehu, saying, “Sons of a fourth generation shall sit for you on the throne of Israel,” and it was so.

KJV 1900King James Version

In the thirty and eighth year of Azariah king of Judah did Zachariah the son of Jeroboam reign over Israel in Samaria six months. And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord, as his fathers had done: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. And Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him, and smote him before the people, and slew him, and reigned in his stead. And the rest of the acts of Zachariah, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel. This was the word of the Lord which he spake unto Jehu, saying, Thy sons shall sit on the throne of Israel unto the fourth generation. And so it came to pass.
