13And the Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

The Cleansing of the Temple

14And he found in the temple courts* those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated. 15And he made a whip of cords and* drove them* all out of the temple courts,* both the sheep and the oxen, and he poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their* tables. 16And to the ones selling the doves he said, “Take these things away from here! Do not make my Father’s house a marketplace!”f 17His disciples remembered that it is written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”g

18So the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign do you show to us, because you are doing these things?” 19Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up!” 20Then the Jews said, “This temple has been under constructionh forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?”

Footnotes

  1. *Here “courts” is supplied to distinguish this area from the interior of the temple building itself
  2. *Here “and” is supplied because the previous participle (“made”) has been translated as a finite verb
  3. *Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation
  4. *Here “courts” is supplied to distinguish this area from the interior of the temple building itself
  5. *Literally “the”; the Greek article is used here as a possessive pronoun
  6. fLiterally “a market house”; or “a house of merchants” (an allusion to Zech 14:21)
  7. gA quotation from Ps 69:9
  8. hThis translation of the aorist verb is based on a very close parallel in Ezra 5:16 (LXX), where it is clear from the following verb that the construction had not yet been completed

ESVEnglish Standard Version

The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

So the Jews said to him, “What sign do you show us for doing these things?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?”

NIVNew International Version (2011)

When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!” His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

The Jews then responded to him, “What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”

Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

They replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?”

CSBChristian Standard Bible

The Jewish Passover was near, and so Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling oxen, sheep, and doves, and he also found the money changers sitting there. After making a whip out of cords, he drove everyone out of the temple with their sheep and oxen. He also poured out the money changers’ coins and overturned the tables. He told those who were selling doves, “Get these things out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a marketplace!”

And his disciples remembered that it is written: Zeal for your house will consume me.

So the Jews replied to him, “What sign will you show us for doing these things?”

Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it up in three days.”

Therefore the Jews said, “This temple took forty-six years to build, and will you raise it up in three days?”

NLTNew Living Translation

It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem. In the Temple area he saw merchants selling cattle, sheep, and doves for sacrifices; he also saw dealers at tables exchanging foreign money. Jesus made a whip from some ropes and chased them all out of the Temple. He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money changers’ coins over the floor, and turned over their tables. Then, going over to the people who sold doves, he told them, “Get these things out of here. Stop turning my Father’s house into a marketplace!”

Then his disciples remembered this prophecy from the Scriptures: “Passion for God’s house will consume me.”

But the Jewish leaders demanded, “What are you doing? If God gave you authority to do this, show us a miraculous sign to prove it.”

“All right,” Jesus replied. “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”

“What!” they exclaimed. “It has taken forty-six years to build this Temple, and you can rebuild it in three days?”

KJV 1900King James Version

And the Jews’ passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers’ money, and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise. And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
