Footnotes

  1. 1 Or “good.”
  2. 2 Traditionally “O Most High.”
  3. 3 The words “it is fitting” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons. Verses 1–3 are actually one long sentence in the Hebrew text, but this has been divided up into two shorter sentences in the translation in keeping with contemporary English style.
  4. 4 Heb “the works of your hands.”
  5. 5 Heb “very deep [are] your thoughts.” God’s “thoughts” refer here to his moral design of the world, as outlined in vv. 6–15.
  6. 6 Heb “the brutish man does not know, and the fool does not understand this.” The adjective בַּעַר (ba’ar, “brutish”) refers to spiritual insensitivity, not mere lack of intelligence or reasoning ability (see Pss 49:10; 73:22; Prov 12:1; 30:2, as well as the use of the related verb in Ps 94:8).
  7. 7 Or “flourish.”
  8. 8 Heb “in order that they might be destroyed permanently.” God allows the wicked to prosper temporarily so that he might reveal his justice. When the wicked are annihilated, God demonstrates that wickedness does not pay off.
  9. 9 Heb “[are elevated] on high.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,

to sing praises to your name, O Most High;

to declare your steadfast love in the morning,

and your faithfulness by night,

to the music of the lute and the harp,

to the melody of the lyre.

For you, O Lord, have made me glad by your work;

at the works of your hands I sing for joy.

How great are your works, O Lord!

Your thoughts are very deep!

The stupid man cannot know;

the fool cannot understand this:

that though the wicked sprout like grass

and all evildoers flourish,

they are doomed to destruction forever;

but you, O Lord, are on high forever.

NIVNew International Version (2011)

It is good to praise the Lord

and make music to your name, O Most High,

proclaiming your love in the morning

and your faithfulness at night,

to the music of the ten-stringed lyre

and the melody of the harp.

For you make me glad by your deeds, Lord;

I sing for joy at what your hands have done.

How great are your works, Lord,

how profound your thoughts!

Senseless people do not know,

fools do not understand,

that though the wicked spring up like grass

and all evildoers flourish,

they will be destroyed forever.

But you, Lord, are forever exalted.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,

to sing praise to your name, Most High,

to declare your faithful love in the morning

and your faithfulness at night,

with a ten-stringed harp

and the music of a lyre.

For you have made me rejoice, Lord,

by what you have done;

I will shout for joy

because of the works of your hands.

How magnificent are your works, Lord,

how profound your thoughts!

A stupid person does not know,

a fool does not understand this:

though the wicked sprout like grass

and all evildoers flourish,

they will be eternally destroyed.

But you, Lord, are exalted forever.

NLTNew Living Translation

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,

to sing praises to the Most High.

It is good to proclaim your unfailing love in the morning,

your faithfulness in the evening,

accompanied by a ten-stringed instrument, a harp,

and the melody of a lyre.

You thrill me, Lord, with all you have done for me!

I sing for joy because of what you have done.

O Lord, what great works you do!

And how deep are your thoughts.

Only a simpleton would not know,

and only a fool would not understand this:

Though the wicked sprout like weeds

and evildoers flourish,

they will be destroyed forever.

But you, O Lord, will be exalted forever.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

It is good to give thanks to Yahweh,

and to sing praise concerning your name, O Most High;

to declare in the morning your loyal love

and your faithfulness in the night,

on the ten string, and on the harp,

with a melody on the lyre.

For you, O Yahweh, have made me glad by your work;

by the deeds of your hands I sing for joy.

How great are your deeds, O Yahweh;

how very deep are your thoughts.

The brutish man does not know,

and the fool cannot understand this.

When the wicked flourish like grass

and all the workers of evil blossom,

it is so they can be destroyed forever.

But you are on high forever, O Yahweh.

KJV 1900King James Version

It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord,

And to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:

To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning,

And thy faithfulness every night,

Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery;

Upon the harp with a solemn sound.

For thou, Lord, hast made me glad through thy work:

I will triumph in the works of thy hands.

O Lord, how great are thy works!

And thy thoughts are very deep.

A brutish man knoweth not;

Neither doth a fool understand this.

When the wicked spring as the grass,

And when all the workers of iniquity do flourish;

It is that they shall be destroyed for ever:

But thou, Lord, art most high for evermore.
