119:97O how I love your law!
All day long I meditate on it.
119:98Your commandments131 make me wiser than my enemies,
for I am always aware of them.
119:99I have more insight than all my teachers,
for I meditate on your rules.
119:100I am more discerning than those older than I,
for I observe your precepts.
119:101I stay away132 from the evil path,
so that I might keep your instructions.133
119:102I do not turn aside from your regulations,
for you teach me.
119:103Your words are sweeter
in my mouth than honey!134
119:104Your precepts give me discernment.
Therefore I hate all deceitful actions.135
Footnotes
- 131 The plural form needs to be revocalized as a singular in order to agree with the preceding singular verb and the singular pronoun in the next line. The Lord’s “command” refers here to the law (see Ps 19:8).
- 132 Heb “I hold back my feet.”
- 133 Heb “your word.” Many medieval Hebrew read the plural.
- 134 Heb “How smooth they are to my palate, your word, more than honey to my mouth.” A few medieval Hebrew , as well as several other ancient witnesses, read the plural “your words,” which can then be understood as the subject of the plural verb “they are smooth.”
- 135 Heb “every false path.”

Oh how I love your law!
It is my meditation all the day.
Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies,
for it is ever with me.
I have more understanding than all my teachers,
for your testimonies are my meditation.
I understand more than the aged,
for I keep your precepts.
I hold back my feet from every evil way,
in order to keep your word.
I do not turn aside from your rules,
for you have taught me.
How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Through your precepts I get understanding;
therefore I hate every false way.

Oh, how I love your instructions!
I think about them all day long.
Your commands make me wiser than my enemies,
for they are my constant guide.
Yes, I have more insight than my teachers,
for I am always thinking of your laws.
I am even wiser than my elders,
for I have kept your commandments.
I have refused to walk on any evil path,
so that I may remain obedient to your word.
I haven’t turned away from your regulations,
for you have taught me well.
How sweet your words taste to me;
they are sweeter than honey.
Your commandments give me understanding;
no wonder I hate every false way of life.
