Footnotes

  1. 26 Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.
  2. 27 Grk “to him”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
  3. 28 Grk “village, and.” Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative. Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.
  4. 29 Grk “on him,” but the word πάλιν in v. 25 implies that Jesus touched the man’s eyes at this point.
  5. 30 The verb ἀναβλέπω, though normally meaning “look up,” when used in conjunction with blindness means “regain sight.”
  6. 31 Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
  7. 32 Grk “his”; the referent (the blind man) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
  8. 33 Or “he looked intently”; or “he stared with eyes wide open” ( διαβλέπω 1).

They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?”

He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.”

Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

They came to Bethsaida. They brought a blind man to him and begged him to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and brought him out of the village. Spitting on his eyes and laying his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?”

He looked up and said, “I see people—they look like trees walking.”

Again Jesus placed his hands on the man’s eyes. The man looked intently and his sight was restored and he saw everything clearly.

NLTNew Living Translation

When they arrived at Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man to Jesus, and they begged him to touch the man and heal him. Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. Then, spitting on the man’s eyes, he laid his hands on him and asked, “Can you see anything now?”

The man looked around. “Yes,” he said, “I see people, but I can’t see them very clearly. They look like trees walking around.”

Then Jesus placed his hands on the man’s eyes again, and his eyes were opened. His sight was completely restored, and he could see everything clearly.

LEBThe Lexham English Bible
