Footnotes

  1. 37 Here δέ (de) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.
  2. 38 Grk “and the,” but καί (kai) has not been translated since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more.
  3. 39 This term also appears in v. 2.
  4. 40 Grk “behold, I” A transitional use of ἰδού (idou) has not been translated here.
  5. 41 Grk “nothing did I find in this man by way of cause.” The reference to “nothing” is emphatic.
  6. 42 With the statement “he has done nothing,” Pilate makes another claim that Jesus is innocent of any crime worthy of death.
  7. 43 Grk “nothing deserving death has been done by him.” The passive construction has been translated as an active one in keeping with contemporary English style.

Pilate called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people, and said to them, “You have brought me this man as one who misleads the people. But in fact, after examining him in your presence, I have found no grounds to charge this man with those things you accuse him of. Neither has Herod, because he sent him back to us. Clearly, he has done nothing to deserve death.

NLTNew Living Translation

Then Pilate called together the leading priests and other religious leaders, along with the people, and he announced his verdict. “You brought this man to me, accusing him of leading a revolt. I have examined him thoroughly on this point in your presence and find him innocent. Herod came to the same conclusion and sent him back to us. Nothing this man has done calls for the death penalty.

So Pilate called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people, and behold, when I examined him before you, I found nothing in this man as basis for the accusation which you are making against him.
