25:30“Then, Jeremiah,80 make the following prophecy81 against them:

‘Like a lion about to attack,82 the Lord will roar from the heights of heaven;

from his holy dwelling on high he will roar loudly.

He will roar mightily against his land.83

He will shout in triumph like those stomping juice from the grapes84

against all those who live on the earth.

25:31The sounds of battle85 will resound to the ends of the earth.

For the Lord will bring charges against the nations.86

He will pass judgment on all humankind

and will hand the wicked over to be killed in war.’87

The Lord so affirms it!88

Footnotes

  1. 80 The word “Jeremiah” is not in the text. It is supplied in the translation to make clear who is being addressed.
  2. 81 Heb “Prophesy against them all these words.”
  3. 82 The words “like a lion about to attack” are not in the text but are implicit in the metaphor. The explicit comparison of the Lord to a lion is made at the end of the passage in v. 38. The words are supplied in the translation here for clarity. For the metaphor of the Lord going forth against his enemies like an attacking lion see Jer 49:19; 50:44; Isa 31:4 in all of which the Lord comes against the nations in defense of his people. In Hos 5:14 the metaphor is turned against his own people. The figure of a lion ravaging people has already been used in Jer 4:7 of the enemy from the north (Babylon).
  4. 83 The word used here (Heb “his habitation”) refers to the land of Canaan which the Lord chose to make his earthly dwelling (Exod 15:13) and which was the dwelling place of his chosen people (Jer 10:25; Isa 32:18). Judgment would begin at the “house of God” (v. 29; 1 Pet 4:17) but would extend to the rest of the earth (v. 29).
  5. 84 The metaphor shifts from God as a lion to God as a mighty warrior (Jer 20:11; Isa 42:13; Zeph 3:17) shouting in triumph over his foes. Within the metaphor is a simile where the warrior is compared to a person stomping on grapes to remove the juice from them in the making of wine. The figure will be invoked later in a battle scene where the sounds of joy in the grape harvest are replaced by the sounds of joy of the enemy soldiers (Jer 48:33). The picture is drawn in more gory detail in Isa 63:1–6.
  6. 85 For the use of this word see Amos 2:2; Hos 10:14; Ps 74:23. See also the usage in Isa 66:6 which is very similar to the metaphorical usage here.
  7. 86 Heb “the Lord has a lawsuit against the nations.” For usage of the term see Hos 4:1; Mic 6:2, and compare the usage of the related verb in Jer 2:9; 12:1.
  8. 87 Heb “give the wicked over to the sword.” There is undoubtedly a deliberate allusion here to the reference to the “wars” (Heb “sword”) that the Lord had said he would send raging through the nations (vv. 16, 27) and the “war” (Heb “sword”) that he is proclaiming against them (v. 29).
  9. 88 Heb “Oracle of the Lord.”

ESVEnglish Standard Version

“You, therefore, shall prophesy against them all these words, and say to them:

“ ‘The Lord will roar from on high,

and from his holy habitation utter his voice;

he will roar mightily against his fold,

and shout, like those who tread grapes,

against all the inhabitants of the earth.

The clamor will resound to the ends of the earth,

for the Lord has an indictment against the nations;

he is entering into judgment with all flesh,

and the wicked he will put to the sword,

declares the Lord.’

NIVNew International Version (2011)

“Now prophesy all these words against them and say to them:

“ ‘The Lord will roar from on high;

he will thunder from his holy dwelling

and roar mightily against his land.

He will shout like those who tread the grapes,

shout against all who live on the earth.

The tumult will resound to the ends of the earth,

for the Lord will bring charges against the nations;

he will bring judgment on all mankind

and put the wicked to the sword,’ ”

declares the Lord.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

“As for you, you are to prophesy all these things to them, and say to them:

The Lord roars from on high;

he makes his voice heard from his holy dwelling.

He roars loudly over his grazing land;

he calls out with a shout, like those who tread grapes,

against all the inhabitants of the earth.

The tumult reaches to the ends of the earth

because the Lord brings a case against the nations.

He enters into judgment with all humanity.

As for the wicked, he hands them over to the sword—

this is the Lord’s declaration.

NLTNew Living Translation

“Now prophesy all these things, and say to them,

“ ‘The Lord will roar against his own land

from his holy dwelling in heaven.

He will shout like those who tread grapes;

he will shout against everyone on earth.

His cry of judgment will reach the ends of the earth,

for the Lord will bring his case against all the nations.

He will judge all the people of the earth,

slaughtering the wicked with the sword.

I, the Lord, have spoken!’ ”

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

And you yourself shall prophesy against them all these words, and you shall say to them:

‘Yahweh will roar from on high,

and from his holy dwelling place he will give his voice.

He will roar mightily against his settlement,

a jubilant shout like those who tread grapes,

he will answer against all the inhabitants of the earth.

The rage of battle will resound to the end of the earth,

for there is a lawsuit of Yahweh against the nations.

He is entering into judgment with all wicked flesh,

he will give them to the sword,’ declares Yahweh.”

KJV 1900King James Version

Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words, and say unto them,

The Lord shall roar from on high,

And utter his voice from his holy habitation;

He shall mightily roar upon his habitation;

He shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes,

Against all the inhabitants of the earth.

A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth;

For the Lord hath a controversy with the nations,

He will plead with all flesh;

He will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the Lord.
