The Lord Will Become King
24:21At that time47 the Lord will punish48
the heavenly forces in the heavens49
and the earthly kings on the earth.
24:22They will be imprisoned in a pit,50
locked up in a prison,
and after staying there for a long time,51 they will be punished.52
24:23The full moon will be covered up,53
the bright sun54 will be darkened;55
for the Lord who commands armies will rule56
on Mount Zion in Jerusalem57
in the presence of his assembly, in majestic splendor.58
Footnotes
- 47 Or “in that day” (so ). The verb that introduces this verse serves as a discourse particle and is untranslated; see note on “in the future” in .
- 48 Heb “visit [in judgment].”
- 49 Heb “the host of the height in the height.” The “host of the height/heaven” refers to the heavenly luminaries (stars and planets, see, among others, Deut 4:19; 17:3; 2 Kgs 17:16; 21:3, 5; 23:4–5; 2 Chr 33:3, 5) that populate the divine/heavenly assembly in mythological and prescientific Israelite thought (see Job 38:7; Isa 14:13).
- 50 Heb “they will be gathered [in] a gathering [as] a prisoner in a cistern.” It is tempting to eliminate אֲסֵפָה (’asefah, “a gathering”) as dittographic or as a gloss, but sound repetition is one of the main characteristics of the style of this section of the chapter.
- 51 Heb “and after a multitude of days.”
- 52 Heb “visited” (so , ). This verse can mean to visit for good or for evil. The translation assumes the latter, based on v. 21a. However, 823 פָּקַד B.Niph.2 suggests the meaning “visit graciously” here, in which case one might translate “they will be released.”
- 53 Heb “will be ashamed.”
- 54 Or “glow of the sun.”
- 55 Heb “will be ashamed” (so ).
- 56 Or “take his throne,” “become king.”
- 57 For location see ; ; ; ; ; ; ; ; .
- 58 Heb “and before his elders [in] splendor.”

On that day the Lord will punish
the host of heaven, in heaven,
and the kings of the earth, on the earth.
They will be gathered together
as prisoners in a pit;
they will be shut up in a prison,
and after many days they will be punished.
Then the moon will be confounded
and the sun ashamed,
for the Lord of hosts reigns
on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
and his glory will be before his elders.

NIVNew International Version (2011)
In that day the Lord will punish
the powers in the heavens above
and the kings on the earth below.
They will be herded together
like prisoners bound in a dungeon;
they will be shut up in prison
and be punished after many days.
The moon will be dismayed,
the sun ashamed;
for the Lord Almighty will reign
on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
and before its elders—with great glory.

CSBChristian Standard Bible
On that day the Lord will punish
the army of the heights in the heights
and the kings of the ground on the ground.
They will be gathered together
like prisoners in a pit.
They will be confined to a dungeon;
after many days they will be punished.
The moon will be put to shame
and the sun disgraced,
because the Lord of Armies will reign as king
on Mount Zion in Jerusalem,
and he will display his glory
in the presence of his elders.

NLTNew Living Translation
In that day the Lord will punish the gods in the heavens
and the proud rulers of the nations on earth.
They will be rounded up and put in prison.
They will be shut up in prison
and will finally be punished.
Then the glory of the moon will wane,
and the brightness of the sun will fade,
for the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will rule on Mount Zion.
He will rule in great glory in Jerusalem,
in the sight of all the leaders of his people.

And this shall happen on that day:
Yahweh will punish the host of heaven in heaven,
and the kings of the earth on the earth.
And they will be gathered in a gathering, like a prisoner in a pit.
And they will be shut in a prison and be punished after many days.
And the full moon will be ashamed
and the sun will be ashamed,
for Yahweh of hosts will rule on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
and before his elders in glory.

KJV 1900King James Version
And it shall come to pass in that day,
That the Lord shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high,
And the kings of the earth upon the earth.
And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit,
And shall be shut up in the prison,
And after many days shall they be visited.
Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed,
When the Lord of hosts shall reign
In mount Zion, and in Jerusalem,
And before his ancients gloriously.
