Footnotes

  1. 22 When the verb חָרַד (kharad, “to tremble”) is used with prepositions of direction, it denotes “to go or come trembling” ( 353 חָרַד 4; e.g., Gen 42:28; 1 Sam 13:7; 16:4; 21:2; Hos 11:10, 11). Thus, the phrase מִיָּם … וְיֶחֶרְדוּ (véyekherdu … miyyam) means “to come trembling from the west.” Cf. “shall come frightened from the west.”
  2. 23 For the meaning of חָרַד (harad, “to tremble”) with prepositions of direction, see 11:10 above.
  3. 24 Beginning with 11:12, the verse numbers through 12:14 in the English Bible differ by one from the verse numbers in the Hebrew text (), with 11:12 = 12:1 , 12:1 = 12:2 , etc., through 12:14 = 12:15 . From 13:1 to 13:16 the verse numbers in the English Bible and the Hebrew Bible are again the same.
  4. 25 The phrase “has surrounded me” is not repeated in the Hebrew text here, but is implied by the parallelism in the preceding line. It is supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons, smoothness, and readability.
  5. 26 The verb רוּד (rud, “to roam about freely”) is used in a concrete sense to refer to someone wandering restlessly and roaming back and forth ( 923 רוּד; Judg 11:37). Here, it is used figuratively, possibly with positive connotations, as indicated by the preposition עִם (’im, “with”), to indicate accompaniment: “but Judah still goes about with God” ( רוד). Some English versions render it positively: “Judah still walks with God” (, ); “Judah is restive under God” (); “but Judah stands firm with God” (); “but Judah yet ruleth with God” (, ). Other English versions adopt the negative connotation “to wander restlessly” and nuance עִם in an adversative sense (“against”): “Judah is still rebellious against God” (), “Judah is unruly against God” (), and “the people of Judah are still rebelling against me” ().

And Judah is unruly against God,

even against the faithful Holy One.

CSBChristian Standard Bible

They will follow the Lord;

he will roar like a lion.

When he roars,

his children will come trembling from the west.

They will be roused like birds from Egypt

and like doves from the land of Assyria.

Then I will settle them in their homes.

This is the Lord’s declaration.

Ephraim surrounds me with lies,

the house of Israel, with deceit.

Judah still wanders with God

and is faithful to the holy ones.

NLTNew Living Translation

For someday the people will follow me.

I, the Lord, will roar like a lion.

And when I roar,

my people will return trembling from the west.

Like a flock of birds, they will come from Egypt.

Trembling like doves, they will return from Assyria.

And I will bring them home again,”

says the Lord.

Israel surrounds me with lies and deceit,

but Judah still obeys God

and is faithful to the Holy One.

When he roars,

his children will come trembling

from the sea.

KJV 1900King James Version

They shall walk after the Lord: he shall roar like a lion:

When he shall roar, then the children shall tremble from the west.

They shall tremble as a bird out of Egypt,

And as a dove out of the land of Assyria:

And I will place them in their houses, saith the Lord.

Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit:
