El herrero corta el metal,
después lo trabaja en las brasas,
le va dando forma con el mazo,
lo trabaja con brazo vigoroso.
Acaba hambriento y exhausto,
pasa sed y siente fatiga.
El carpintero aplica la regla,
dibuja la imagen con punzón,
la trabaja con gubia y compás;
le da figura de hombre,
igual que una imagen humana,
destinada a habitar una casa.
Corta madera de cedro,
escoge una encina o un roble,
elige entre los árboles del bosque.
Planta un pino, que crece con la lluvia
y sirve de leña a la gente;
usa una parte para calentarse
o también para cocer el pan.
Pero fabrica un dios y lo adora,
hace una imagen y la reverencia.
Quema una mitad en el fuego,
asa carne en la lumbre y se sacia;
se calienta y dice: “¡Qué bien;
qué caliente delante del hogar!”.
Con el resto fabrica un dios,
que luego adora y reverencia,
y le pide con una oración:
“Sálvame, que eres mi dios”.
