Psalm 33:17–22 — The New International Version (NIV)

17 A horse is a vain hope for deliverance;

despite all its great strength it cannot save.

18 But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him,

on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,

19 to deliver them from death

and keep them alive in famine.

20 We wait in hope for the Lord;

he is our help and our shield.

21 In him our hearts rejoice,

for we trust in his holy name.

22 May your unfailing love be with us, Lord,

even as we put our hope in you.

Psalm 33:17–22 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

17 An horse is a vain thing for safety:

Neither shall he deliver any by his great strength.

18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him,

Upon them that hope in his mercy;

19 To deliver their soul from death,

And to keep them alive in famine.

20 Our soul waiteth for the Lord:

He is our help and our shield.

21 For our heart shall rejoice in him,

Because we have trusted in his holy name.

22 Let thy mercy, O Lord, be upon us,

According as we hope in thee.

Psalm 33:17–22 — New Living Translation (NLT)

17 Don’t count on your warhorse to give you victory—

for all its strength, it cannot save you.

18 But the Lord watches over those who fear him,

those who rely on his unfailing love.

19 He rescues them from death

and keeps them alive in times of famine.

20 We put our hope in the Lord.

He is our help and our shield.

21 In him our hearts rejoice,

for we trust in his holy name.

22 Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord,

for our hope is in you alone.

Psalm 33:17–22 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

17 A horse is a vain hope for safety;

Neither shall it deliver any by its great strength.

18 Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,

On those who hope in His mercy,

19 To deliver their soul from death,

And to keep them alive in famine.

20 Our soul waits for the Lord;

He is our help and our shield.

21 For our heart shall rejoice in Him,

Because we have trusted in His holy name.

22 Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us,

Just as we hope in You.

Psalm 33:17–22 — New Century Version (NCV)

17 Horses can’t bring victory;

they can’t save by their strength.

18 But the Lord looks after those who fear him,

those who put their hope in his love.

19 He saves them from death

and spares their lives in times of hunger.

20 So our hope is in the Lord.

He is our help, our shield to protect us.

21 We rejoice in him,

because we trust his holy name.

22 Lord, show your love to us

as we put our hope in you.

Psalm 33:17–22 — American Standard Version (ASV 1901)

17 A horse is a vain thing for safety;

Neither doth he deliver any by his great power.

18 Behold, the eye of Jehovah is upon them that fear him,

Upon them that hope in his lovingkindness;

19 To deliver their soul from death,

And to keep them alive in famine.

20 Our soul hath waited for Jehovah:

He is our help and our shield.

21 For our heart shall rejoice in him,

Because we have trusted in his holy name.

22 Let thy lovingkindness, O Jehovah, be upon us,

According as we have hoped in thee.

Psalm 33:17–22 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

17 The horse is a vain thing for safety; neither doth he deliver by his great power. 18 Behold, the eye of Jehovah is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his loving-kindness, 19 To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine. 20 Our soul waiteth for Jehovah: he is our help and our shield. 21 For in him shall our heart rejoice, because we have confided in his holy name. 22 Let thy loving-kindness, O Jehovah, be upon us, according as we have hoped in thee.

Psalm 33:17–22 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

17 Horses are not a guarantee for victory.

Their great strength cannot help someone escape.

18 The Lord’s eyes are on those who fear him,

on those who wait with hope for his mercy

19 to rescue their souls from death

and keep them alive during a famine.

20 We wait for the Lord

He is our help and our shield.

21 In him our hearts find joy.

In his holy name we trust.

22 Let your mercy rest on us, O Lord

since we wait with hope for you.

Psalm 33:17–22 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

17 The horse is a false hope for safety;

it provides no escape by its great power.

18 Now the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him—

those who depend on His faithful love

19 to deliver them from death

and to keep them alive in famine.

20 We wait for Yahweh;

He is our help and shield.

21 For our hearts rejoice in Him

because we trust in His holy name.

22 May Your faithful love rest on us, Yahweh,

for we put our hope in You.

19 to deliver their soul from death

and to keep them alive in famine.

20 Our soul waits for Yahweh;

because in his holy name we trust.

22 Let your loyal love, O Yahweh, be upon us,

even as we hope in you.

Psalm 33:17–22 — New International Reader’s Version, 1998 ed. (NIrV) (NIrV)

17 People can’t trust a horse to save them either.

Though it is very strong, it can’t save them.

18 But the Lord looks with favor on those who respect him.

He watches over those who put their hope in his faithful love.

19 He watches over them to save them from death.

He wants to keep them alive when there is no food in the land.

20 We wait in hope for the Lord.

He helps us. He is like a shield that keeps us safe.

21 Our hearts are full of joy because of him.

We trust in him, because he is holy.

22 Lord, may your faithful love rest on us.

We put our hope in you.
