Mark 3:1–4

The Man with a Withered Hand

(Mt 12:9–14; Lk 6:6–11)

3 Again he entered the synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. They watched him to see whether he would cure him on the sabbath, so that they might accuse him. And he said to the man who had the withered hand, Come forward.” Then he said to them, Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the sabbath, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent.

Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, Stand up in front of everyone.”

Then Jesus asked them, Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent.

Jesus spoke to the man with the weak and twisted hand. “Stand up in front of everyone,” he said.

Then Jesus asked them, “What does the Law say we should do on the Sabbath day? Should we do good? Or should we do evil? Should we save life? Or should we kill?” But no one answered.
