Isaiah 33:17–22

The Land of the Majestic King

17 Your eyes will see the king in his beauty;

they will behold a land that stretches far away.

18 Your mind will muse on the terror:

“Where is the one who counted?

Where is the one who weighed the tribute?

Where is the one who counted the towers?”

19 No longer will you see the insolent people,

the people of an obscure speech that you cannot comprehend,

stammering in a language that you cannot understand.

20 Look on Zion, the city of our appointed festivals!

Your eyes will see Jerusalem,

a quiet habitation, an immovable tent,

whose stakes will never be pulled up,

and none of whose ropes will be broken.

21 But there the Lord in majesty will be for us

a place of broad rivers and streams,

where no galley with oars can go,

nor stately ship can pass.

22 For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our ruler,

the Lord is our king; he will save us.

Isaiah 33:17–22 — The New International Version (NIV)

17 Your eyes will see the king in his beauty

and view a land that stretches afar.

18 In your thoughts you will ponder the former terror:

“Where is that chief officer?

Where is the one who took the revenue?

Where is the officer in charge of the towers?”

19 You will see those arrogant people no more,

people whose speech is obscure,

whose language is strange and incomprehensible.

20 Look on Zion, the city of our festivals;

your eyes will see Jerusalem,

a peaceful abode, a tent that will not be moved;

its stakes will never be pulled up,

nor any of its ropes broken.

21 There the Lord will be our Mighty One.

It will be like a place of broad rivers and streams.

No galley with oars will ride them,

no mighty ship will sail them.

22 For the Lord is our judge,

the Lord is our lawgiver,

the Lord is our king;

it is he who will save us.

Isaiah 33:17–22 — English Standard Version (ESV)

17 Your eyes will behold the king in his beauty;

they will see a land that stretches afar.

18 Your heart will muse on the terror:

“Where is he who counted, where is he who weighed the tribute?

Where is he who counted the towers?”

19 You will see no more the insolent people,

the people of an obscure speech that you cannot comprehend,

stammering in a tongue that you cannot understand.

20 Behold Zion, the city of our appointed feasts!

Your eyes will see Jerusalem,

an untroubled habitation, an immovable tent,

whose stakes will never be plucked up,

nor will any of its cords be broken.

21 But there the Lord in majesty will be for us

a place of broad rivers and streams,

where no galley with oars can go,

nor majestic ship can pass.

22 For the Lord is our judge; the Lord is our lawgiver;

the Lord is our king; he will save us.

Isaiah 33:17–22 — King James Version (KJV 1900)

17 Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty:

They shall behold the land that is very far off.

18 Thine heart shall meditate terror.

Where is the scribe? where is the receiver?

Where is he that counted the towers?

19 Thou shalt not see a fierce people,

A people of a deeper speech than thou canst perceive;

Of a stammering tongue, that thou canst not understand.

20 Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnities:

Thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation,

A tabernacle that shall not be taken down;

Not one of the stakes thereof shall ever be removed,

Neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken.

21 But there the glorious Lord will be unto us

A place of broad rivers and streams;

Wherein shall go no galley with oars,

Neither shall gallant ship pass thereby.

22 For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver,

The Lord is our king; he will save us.

Isaiah 33:17–22 — New Living Translation (NLT)

17 Your eyes will see the king in all his splendor,

and you will see a land that stretches into the distance.

18 You will think back to this time of terror, asking,

“Where are the Assyrian officers

who counted our towers?

Where are the bookkeepers

who recorded the plunder taken from our fallen city?”

19 You will no longer see these fierce, violent people

with their strange, unknown language.

20 Instead, you will see Zion as a place of holy festivals.

You will see Jerusalem, a city quiet and secure.

It will be like a tent whose ropes are taut

and whose stakes are firmly fixed.

21 The Lord will be our Mighty One.

He will be like a wide river of protection

that no enemy can cross,

that no enemy ship can sail upon.

22 For the Lord is our judge,

our lawgiver, and our king.

He will care for us and save us.

Isaiah 33:17–22 — The New King James Version (NKJV)

17 Your eyes will see the King in His beauty;

They will see the land that is very far off.

18 Your heart will meditate on terror:

“Where is the scribe?

Where is he who weighs?

Where is he who counts the towers?”

19 You will not see a fierce people,

A people of obscure speech, beyond perception,

Of a stammering tongue that you cannot understand.

20 Look upon Zion, the city of our appointed feasts;

Your eyes will see Jerusalem, a quiet home,

A tabernacle that will not be taken down;

Not one of its stakes will ever be removed,

Nor will any of its cords be broken.

21 But there the majestic Lord will be for us

A place of broad rivers and streams,

In which no galley with oars will sail,

Nor majestic ships pass by

22 (For the Lord is our Judge,

The Lord is our Lawgiver,

The Lord is our King;

He will save us);

Isaiah 33:17–22 — New Century Version (NCV)

17 Your eyes will see the king in his beauty.

You will see the land that stretches far away.

18 You will think about the terror of the past:

“Where is that officer?

Where is the one who collected the taxes?

Where is the officer in charge of our defense towers?”

19 No longer will you see those proud people from other countries,

whose strange language you couldn’t understand.

20 Look at Jerusalem, the city of our festivals.

Look at Jerusalem, that beautiful place of rest.

It is like a tent that will never be moved;

the pegs that hold her in place will never be pulled up,

and her ropes will never be broken.

21 There the Lord will be our Mighty One.

That land is a place with streams and wide rivers,

but there will be no enemy boats on those rivers;

no powerful ship will sail on them.

22 This is because the Lord is our judge.

The Lord makes our laws.

The Lord is our king.

He will save us.

Isaiah 33:17–22 — American Standard Version (ASV)

17 Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold a land that reacheth afar. 18 Thy heart shall muse on the terror: Where is he that counted, where is he that weighed the tribute? where is he that counted the towers? 19 Thou shalt not see the fierce people, a people of a deep speech that thou canst not comprehend, of a strange tongue that thou canst not understand. 20 Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnites: thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tent that shall not be removed, the stakes whereof shall never be plucked up, neither shall any of the cords thereof be broken. 21 But there Jehovah will be with us in majesty, a place of broad rivers and streams, wherein shall go no galley with oars, neither shall gallant ship pass thereby. 22 For Jehovah is our judge, Jehovah is our lawgiver, Jehovah is our king; he will save us.

Isaiah 33:17–22 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)

17 Thine eyes shall see the King in his beauty; they shall behold the land that is far off. 18 Thy heart shall meditate on terror: Where is the scribe? where is the receiver? where is he that counted the towers? 19 Thou shalt no more see the fierce people, a people of a deeper speech than thou canst comprehend, of a stammering tongue that cannot be understood. 20 Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnities: thine eyes shall see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tent that shall not be removed, the stakes whereof shall never be pulled up, neither shall any of its cords be broken; 21 but there Jehovah is unto us glorious, —a place of rivers, of broad streams: no galley with oars shall go there, neither shall gallant ship pass thereby. 22 For Jehovah is our judge, Jehovah, our lawgiver, Jehovah, our king: he will save us.

Isaiah 33:17–22 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)

17 Your eyes will see how handsome the king is.

You will see a land that stretches into the distance.

18 Your mind will be thinking of the terrors ⸤in the past⸥.

Where are the scribes?

Where are the tax collectors?

Where are those who counted the towers?

19 You will no longer see those savage people,

those people with an unrecognizable language,

with a foreign language that you can’t understand.

20 Look at Zion, the city of our festivals.

Your eyes will see Jerusalem as a peaceful place.

It is a tent that can’t be moved.

Its tent pegs will never be pulled out,

and none of its ropes will be broken.

21 The Lord will be our mighty defender

in a place surrounded by wide rivers and streams.

Ships with oars won’t travel on them.

Stately ships won’t sail on them.

22 The Lord is our judge.

The Lord is our lawgiver.

The Lord is our king.

The Lord is our savior.

Isaiah 33:17–22 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)

17 Your eyes will see the King in His beauty;

you will see a vast land.

18 Your mind will meditate on the past terror:

“Where is the accountant?

Where is the tribute collector?

Where is the one who spied out our defenses?”

19 You will no longer see the barbarians,

a people whose speech is difficult to comprehend—

who stammer in a language that is not understood.

20 Look at Zion, the city of our festival times.

Your eyes will see Jerusalem,

a peaceful pasture, a tent that does not wander;

its tent pegs will not be pulled up

nor will any of its cords be loosened.

21 For the majestic One, our Lord, will be there,

a place of rivers and broad streams

where ships that are rowed will not go,

and majestic vessels will not pass.

22 For the Lord is our Judge,

the Lord is our lawgiver,

the Lord is our King.

He will save us.

Isaiah 33:17–22 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)

17 Your eyes will see the king in his beauty;

they will see a distant land.

18 Your mind will meditate on the terror:

“Where is the one who counted?

Where is the one who weighed out?

Where is the one who counted the towers?”

19 You will not see the insolent people,

the people whose language is too obscure to understand,

whose stammering of tongue cannot be understood.

20 Look on Zion, the city of our appointed festivals!

Your eyes will see Jerusalem,

an undisturbed settlement,

a tent that is not moved.

No one will ever pull out its tent pegs,

and none of its ropes will be torn in two.

21 Rather, there Yahweh will be mighty for us,

a place of rivers and broad streams,

a galley ship with oars cannot go in it,

and a mighty ship cannot pass through it.

22 For Yahweh is our judge; Yahweh is our lawgiver.

Yahweh is our king; he is the one who will save us.

Isaiah 33:17–22 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)

17 People of Judah, you will see the king in all of his glory and majesty.

You will view his kingdom spreading far and wide.

18 You will think about what used to terrify you.

You will say to yourself,

“Where is that chief officer of Assyria?

Where is the one who forced us to send gifts to his king?

Where is the officer in charge of the towers

that were used when we were attacked?”

19 You won’t see those proud people anymore.

They spoke a strange language.

None of us could understand it.

20 Just look at Zion! It’s the city

where we celebrate our regular feasts.

Turn your eyes toward Jerusalem.

It will be a peaceful place to live in.

It will be like a tent that will never be moved.

Its stakes will never be pulled up.

None of its ropes will be broken.

21 There the Lord will be our Mighty One.

It will be like a place of wide rivers and streams.

No boat with oars will travel on them.

No mighty ship will sail on them.

22 That’s because the Lord is our judge.

The Lord gives us our law.

The Lord is our king.

He will save us.

Isaiah 33:17–22 — New American Standard Bible: 1995 Update (NASB95)

17 Your eyes will see the King in His beauty;

They will behold a far-distant land.

18 Your heart will meditate on terror:

Where is he who counts?

Where is he who weighs?

Where is he who counts the towers?”

19 You will no longer see a fierce people,

A people of unintelligible speech which no one comprehends,

Of a stammering tongue which no one understands.

20 Look upon Zion, the city of our appointed feasts;

Your eyes will see Jerusalem, an undisturbed habitation,

A tent which will not be folded;

Its stakes will never be pulled up,

Nor any of its cords be torn apart.

21 But there the majestic One, the Lord, will be for us

A place of rivers and wide canals

On which no boat with oars will go,

And on which no mighty ship will pass

22 For the Lord is our judge,

The Lord is our lawgiver,

The Lord is our king;

He will save us—
