Proverbs 26:23–28
23 Smooth* words may hide a wicked heart,
just as a pretty glaze covers a clay pot.
24 People may cover their hatred with pleasant words,
but they’re deceiving you.
25 They pretend to be kind, but don’t believe them.
Their hearts are full of many evils.*
26 While their hatred may be concealed by trickery,
their wrongdoing will be exposed in public.
27 If you set a trap for others,
you will get caught in it yourself.
If you roll a boulder down on others,
it will crush you instead.
28 A lying tongue hates its victims,
and flattering words cause ruin.
Proverbs 26:23–28 — The New International Version (NIV)
23 Like a coating of silver dross on earthenware
are fervent lips with an evil heart.
24 Enemies disguise themselves with their lips,
but in their hearts they harbor deceit.
25 Though their speech is charming, do not believe them,
for seven abominations fill their hearts.
26 Their malice may be concealed by deception,
but their wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.
27 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it;
if someone rolls a stone, it will roll back on them.
28 A lying tongue hates those it hurts,
and a flattering mouth works ruin.
Proverbs 26:23–28 — English Standard Version (ESV)
23 Like the glaze covering an earthen vessel
are fervent lips with an evil heart.
24 Whoever hates disguises himself with his lips
and harbors deceit in his heart;
25 when he speaks graciously, believe him not,
for there are seven abominations in his heart;
26 though his hatred be covered with deception,
his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.
27 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it,
and a stone will come back on him who starts it rolling.
28 A lying tongue hates its victims,
and a flattering mouth works ruin.
Proverbs 26:23–28 — King James Version (KJV 1900)
23 Burning lips and a wicked heart
Are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.
24 He that hateth dissembleth with his lips,
And layeth up deceit within him;
25 When he speaketh fair, believe him not:
For there are seven abominations in his heart.
26 Whose hatred is covered by deceit,
His wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.
27 Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein:
And he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him.
28 A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it;
And a flattering mouth worketh ruin.
Proverbs 26:23–28 — The New King James Version (NKJV)
23 Fervent lips with a wicked heart
Are like earthenware covered with silver dross.
24 He who hates, disguises it with his lips,
And lays up deceit within himself;
25 When he speaks kindly, do not believe him,
For there are seven abominations in his heart;
26 Though his hatred is covered by deceit,
His wickedness will be revealed before the assembly.
27 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it,
And he who rolls a stone will have it roll back on him.
28 A lying tongue hates those who are crushed by it,
And a flattering mouth works ruin.
Proverbs 26:23–28 — New Century Version (NCV)
23 Kind words from a wicked mind
are like a shiny coating on a clay pot.
24 Those who hate you may try to fool you with their words,
but in their minds they are planning evil.
25 People’s words may be kind, but don’t believe them,
because their minds are full of evil thoughts.
26 Lies can hide hate,
but the evil will be plain to everyone.
27 Whoever digs a pit for others will fall into it.
Whoever tries to roll a boulder down on others will be crushed by it.
28 Liars hate the people they hurt,
and false praise can ruin others.
Proverbs 26:23–28 — American Standard Version (ASV)
23 Fervent lips and a wicked heart
Are like an earthen vessel overlaid with silver dross.
24 He that hateth dissembleth with his lips;
But he layeth up deceit within him:
25 When he speaketh fair, believe him not;
For there are seven abominations in his heart:
26 Though his hatred cover itself with guile,
His wickedness shall be openly showed before the assembly.
27 Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein;
And he that rolleth a stone, it shall return upon him.
28 A lying tongue hateth those whom it hath wounded;
And a flattering mouth worketh ruin.
Proverbs 26:23–28 — 1890 Darby Bible (DARBY)
23 Ardent lips, and a wicked heart, are as an earthen vessel overlaid with silver dross.
24 He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, but he layeth up deceit within him: 25 when his voice is gracious, believe him not, for there are seven abominations in his heart. 26 Though his hatred is covered by dissimulation, his wickedness shall be made manifest in the congregation.
27 Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein; and he that rolleth a stone, it shall return upon him.
28 A lying tongue hateth those that are injured by it, and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.
Proverbs 26:23–28 — GOD’S WORD Translation (GW)
23 ⸤Like⸥ a clay pot covered with cheap silver,
⸤so⸥ is smooth talk that covers up an evil heart.
24 Whoever is filled with hate disguises it with his speech,
but inside he holds on to deceit.
25 When he talks charmingly, do not trust him
because of the seven disgusting things in his heart.
26 His hatred is deceitfully hidden,
but his wickedness will be revealed to the community.
27 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it.
Whoever rolls a stone will have it roll back on him.
28 A lying tongue hates its victims,
and a flattering mouth causes ruin.
Proverbs 26:23–28 — The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB)
23 Smooth lips with an evil heart
are like glaze on an earthen vessel.
24 A hateful person disguises himself with his speech
and harbors deceit within.
25 When he speaks graciously, don’t believe him,
for there are seven abominations in his heart.
26 Though his hatred is concealed by deception,
his evil will be revealed in the assembly.
27 The one who digs a pit will fall into it,
and whoever rolls a stone—
it will come back on him.
28 A lying tongue hates those it crushes,
and a flattering mouth causes ruin.
Proverbs 26:23–28 — The New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
23 Like the glaze covering an earthen vessel
are smooth lips with an evil heart.
24 An enemy dissembles in speaking
while harboring deceit within;
25 when an enemy speaks graciously, do not believe it,
for there are seven abominations concealed within;
26 though hatred is covered with guile,
the enemy’s wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.
27 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it,
and a stone will come back on the one who starts it rolling.
28 A lying tongue hates its victims,
and a flattering mouth works ruin.
Proverbs 26:23–28 — The Lexham English Bible (LEB)
23 Like impure silver which overlays an earthen vessel,
so are smooth lips and an evil heart.
24 On his lips, an enemy will pretend,
but inside he will harbor deceit.
25 When he makes his voice gracious, do not believe him,
for seven abominations are in his heart.
26 Though hatred is covered with guile,
its evil will be exposed in the assembly.
27 He who digs a pit, in it he will fall,
and he who rolls a stone, on him it will come back.
28 A tongue of deceit hates its victim,
and a flattering mouth makes ruin.
Proverbs 26:23–28 — New International Reader’s Version (1998) (NIrV)
23 Warm words that come from an evil heart
are like shiny paint on a clay pot.
24 Someone who wants to hurt you uses his words to hide his hatred.
But his heart is full of lies that cover up his evil plans.
25 What a person says can be charming. But don’t believe him.
Seven things that God hates can fill that person’s heart.
26 Hatred can be hidden by lies.
But what is evil will be shown to everyone.
27 If anyone digs a pit, he will fall into it.
If he rolls a big stone, it will roll back on him.
28 A tongue that tells lies hates the people it hurts.
And words that seem to praise you destroy you.

23 Like an earthen vessel overlaid with silver dross
Are burning lips and a wicked heart.
24 He who hates disguises it with his lips,
But he lays up deceit in his heart.
25 When he speaks graciously, do not believe him,
For there are seven abominations in his heart.
26 Though his hatred covers itself with guile,
His wickedness will be revealed before the assembly.
27 He who digs a pit will fall into it,
