Psalm 78:49–55

49 He unleashed against them his hot anger,

his wrath, indignation and hostility—

a band of destroying angels.

50 He prepared a path for his anger;

he did not spare them from death

but gave them over to the plague.

51 He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt,

the firstfruits of manhood in the tents of Ham.

52 But he brought his people out like a flock;

he led them like sheep through the wilderness.

53 He guided them safely, so they were unafraid;

but the sea engulfed their enemies.

54 And so he brought them to the border of his holy land,

to the hill country his right hand had taken.

55 He drove out nations before them

and allotted their lands to them as an inheritance;

he settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.

49 He let loose on them his burning anger,

wrath, indignation, and distress,

a company of destroying angels.

50 He made a path for his anger;

he did not spare them from death,

but gave their lives over to the plague.

51 He struck down every firstborn in Egypt,

the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of Ham.

52 Then he led out his people like sheep

and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

53 He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid,

but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

54 And he brought them to his holy land,

to the mountain which his right hand had won.

55 He drove out nations before them;

he apportioned them for a possession

and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.

49 He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger,

Wrath, and indignation, and trouble,

By sending evil angels among them.

50 He made a way to his anger;

He spared not their soul from death,

But gave their life over to the pestilence;

51 And smote all the firstborn in Egypt;

The chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham:

52 But made his own people to go forth like sheep,

And guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

53 And he led them on safely, so that they feared not:

But the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

54 And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary,

Even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased.

55 He cast out the heathen also before them,

And divided them an inheritance by line,

And made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.

49 He loosed on them his fierce anger—

all his fury, rage, and hostility.

He dispatched against them

a band of destroying angels.

50 He turned his anger against them;

he did not spare the Egyptians’ lives

but ravaged them with the plague.

51 He killed the oldest son in each Egyptian family,

the flower of youth throughout the land of Egypt.

52 But he led his own people like a flock of sheep,

guiding them safely through the wilderness.

53 He kept them safe so they were not afraid;

but the sea covered their enemies.

54 He brought them to the border of his holy land,

to this land of hills he had won for them.

55 He drove out the nations before them;

he gave them their inheritance by lot.

He settled the tribes of Israel into their homes.

49 He showed them his hot anger.

He sent his strong anger against them,

his destroying angels.

50 He found a way to show his anger.

He did not keep them from dying

but let them die by a terrible disease.

51 God killed all the firstborn sons in Egypt,

the oldest son of each family of Ham.

52 But God led his people out like sheep

and he guided them like a flock through the desert.

53 He led them to safety so they had nothing to fear,

but their enemies drowned in the sea.

54 So God brought them to his holy land,

to the mountain country he took with his own power.

55 He forced out the other nations,

and he had his people inherit the land.

He let the tribes of Israel settle there in tents.

49 He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger,

Wrath, and indignation, and trouble,

A band of angels of evil.

50 He made a path for his anger;

He spared not their soul from death,

But gave their life over to the pestilence,

51 And smote all the first-born in Egypt,

The chief of their strength in the tents of Ham.

52 But he led forth his own people like sheep,

And guided them in the wilderness like a flock.

53 And he led them safely, so that they feared not;

But the sea overwhelmed their enemies.

54 And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary,

To this mountain, which his right hand had gotten.

55 He drove out the nations also before them,

And allotted them for an inheritance by line,

And made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.

49 He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indignation, and distress, —a mission of angels of woes. 50 He made a way for his anger; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence; 51 And he smote all the firstborn in Egypt, the first-fruits of their vigour in the tents of Ham. 52 And he made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock; 53 And he led them safely, so that they were without fear; and the sea covered their enemies. 54 And he brought them to his holy border, this mountain, which his right hand purchased; 55 And he drove out the nations before them, and allotted them for an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.

49 He sent his burning anger, rage, fury, and hostility against them. 

He sent an army of destroying angels. 

50 He cleared a path for his anger. 

He did not spare them. 

He let the plague take their lives. 

51 He slaughtered every firstborn in Egypt, 

the ones born in the tents of Ham when their fathers were young. 

52 But he led his own people out like sheep 

and guided them like a flock through the wilderness. 

53 He led them safely. 

They had no fear while the sea covered their enemies. 

54 He brought them into his holy land, 

to this mountain that his power had won. 

55 He forced nations out of their way 

and gave them the land of the nations as their inheritance. 

He settled the tribes of Israel in their own tents.

fury, indignation, and calamity—

a band of deadly messengers.

50 He cleared a path for His anger.

He did not spare them from death

but delivered their lives to the plague.

51 He struck all the firstborn in Egypt,

the first progeny of the tents of Ham.

52 He led His people out like sheep

and guided them like a flock in the wilderness.

53 He led them safely, and they were not afraid;

but the sea covered their enemies.

54 He brought them to His holy land,

to the mountain His right hand acquired.

55 He drove out nations before them.

He apportioned their inheritance by lot

and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.

55 He drove out nations before them;

he apportioned them for a possession

and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.

49 He sent against them his fierce anger,

rage and indignation and trouble,

a band of destroying angels.

50 He cleared a path for his anger.

He did not spare them from death

but handed their life over to the plague.

51 And he struck down all the firstborn in Egypt,

the first of their virility in the tents of Ham.

52 Then he led out his people like sheep

and guided them like a herd in the wilderness.

53 And he led them safely and they were not afraid,

but the sea covered their enemies.

54 So he brought them to his holy territory,

this mountain his right hand acquired.

55 And he drove out nations before them

and allocated them for an inheritance by boundary line,

and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.

49 He brought great trouble on Egypt by pouring out his blazing anger.

In his hot anger he sent destroying angels against them.

50 God prepared a path for his anger.

He didn’t spare their lives.

He gave them over to the plague.

51 He killed the oldest son of each family in Egypt.

He struck down the oldest son in every house in the land of Ham.

52 But he brought his people out like a flock.

He led them like sheep through the desert.

53 He guided them safely, and they weren’t afraid.

But the Red Sea swallowed up their enemies.

54 He brought his people to the border of his holy land.

He led them to the central hill country he had taken by his power.

55 He drove the nations out to make room for his people.

He gave to each family a piece of land to pass on to their children.

He settled the tribes of Israel in their homes.

49 He sent upon them His burning anger,

Fury and indignation and trouble,

A band of destroying angels.

50 He leveled a path for His anger;

He did not spare their soul from death,

But gave over their life to the plague,

51 And smote all the firstborn in Egypt,

The first issue of their virility in the tents of Ham.

52 But He led forth His own people like sheep

And guided them in the wilderness like a flock;

53 He led them safely, so that they did not fear;

But the sea engulfed their enemies.

54 So He brought them to His holy land,

To this hill country which His right hand had gained.

55 He also drove out the nations before them

And apportioned them for an inheritance by measurement,

And made the tribes of Israel dwell in their tents.
