Psalm 59:title–65:13
The Assured Judgment of the Wicked
To the Chief Musician. Set to 1“Do Not Destroy.” A Michtam of David aWhen Saul Sent Men, and They Watched the House in Order to Kill Him.
1 Deliver me from my enemies, O my God;
2Defend me from those who rise up against me.
2 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity,
And save me from bloodthirsty men.
3 For look, they lie in wait for my life;
bThe mighty gather against me,
Not for my transgression nor for my sin, O Lord.
4 They run and prepare themselves through no fault of mine.
cAwake to help me, and behold!
5 You therefore, O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel,
Awake to punish all the 3nations;
Do not be merciful to any wicked transgressors.
Selah
6 dAt evening they return,
They growl like a dog,
And go all around the city.
7 Indeed, they belch with their mouth;
eSwords are in their lips;
For they say, f“Who hears?”
8 But gYou, O Lord, shall laugh at them;
You shall have all the 4nations in derision.
9 I will wait for You, O You 5his Strength;
10 7My God of mercy shall icome to meet me;
God shall let jme see my desire on my enemies.
11 Do not slay them, lest my people forget;
Scatter them by Your power,
And bring them down,
O Lord our shield.
12 kFor the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips,
Let them even be taken in their pride,
And for the cursing and lying which they speak.
13 lConsume them in wrath, consume them,
That they may not be;
And mlet them know that God rules in Jacob
To the ends of the earth.
Selah
14 And nat evening they return,
They growl like a dog,
And go all around the city.
15 They owander up and down for food,
And 8howl if they are not satisfied.
16 But I will sing of Your power;
Yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning;
For You have been my defense
And refuge in the day of my trouble.
17 To You, pO my Strength, I will sing praises;
For God is my defense,
My God of mercy.
Urgent Prayer for the Restored Favor of God
To the Chief Musician. aSet to 1“Lily of the Testimony.” A Michtam of David. For Teaching. bWhen He Fought Against Mesopotamia and Syria of Zobah, and Joab Returned and Killed Twelve Thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.
1 O God, cYou have cast us off;
You have broken us down;
You have been displeased;
Oh, restore us again!
2 You have made the earth tremble;
You have broken it;
dHeal its breaches, for it is shaking.
3 eYou have shown Your people hard things;
fYou have made us drink the wine of 2confusion.
4 gYou have given a banner to those who fear You,
That it may be displayed because of the truth.
Selah
5 hThat Your beloved may be delivered,
Save with Your right hand, and hear me.
6 God has ispoken in His holiness:
“I will rejoice;
And measure out lthe Valley of Succoth.
7 Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine;
mEphraim also is the 3helmet for My head;
nJudah is My lawgiver.
8 oMoab is My washpot;
pOver Edom I will cast My shoe;
qPhilistia, shout in triumph because of Me.”
9 Who will bring me to the strong city?
Who will lead me to Edom?
10 Is it not You, O God, rwho cast us off?
And You, O God, who did snot go out with our armies?
tFor the help of man is useless.
12 Through God uwe will do valiantly,
For it is He who shall tread down our enemies.
Assurance of God’s Eternal Protection
To the Chief Musician. On 1A Stringed Instrument. A Psalm of David.
Attend to my prayer.
2 From the end of the earth I will cry to You,
When my heart is overwhelmed;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
3 For You have been a shelter for me,
aA strong tower from the enemy.
4 I will abide in Your 2tabernacle forever;
bI will trust in the shelter of Your wings.
Selah
5 For You, O God, have heard my vows;
You have given me the heritage of those who fear Your name.
6 You will prolong the king’s life,
His years as many generations.
7 He shall abide before God forever.
Oh, prepare mercy cand truth, which may 3preserve him!
8 So I will sing praise to Your name forever,
That I may daily perform my vows.
A Calm Resolve to Wait for the Salvation of God
To the Chief Musician. To aJeduthun. A Psalm of David.
1 Truly bmy soul silently waits for God;
From Him comes my salvation.
2 He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my 1defense;
I shall not be greatly cmoved. 2
3 How long will you attack a man?
You shall be slain, all of you,
dLike a leaning wall and a tottering fence.
4 They only consult to cast him down from his high position;
They edelight in lies;
They bless with their mouth,
But they curse inwardly.
Selah
5 My soul, wait silently for God alone,
For my 3expectation is from Him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defense;
I shall not be 4moved.
7 fIn God is my salvation and my glory;
The rock of my strength,
And my refuge, is in God.
8 Trust in Him at all times, you people;
gPour out your heart before Him;
God is a refuge for us.
Selah
9 hSurely men of low degree are 5a vapor,
Men of high degree are a lie;
If they are weighed on the scales,
They are altogether lighter than vapor.
10 Do not trust in oppression,
Nor vainly hope in robbery;
iIf riches increase,
Do not set your heart on them.
Twice I have heard this:
That power belongs to God.
12 Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy;
For jYou 6render to each one according to his work.
A Psalm of David aWhen He Was in the Wilderness of Judah.
Early will I seek You;
bMy soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water.
2 So I have looked for You in the sanctuary,
To see cYour power and Your glory.
3 dBecause Your lovingkindness is better than life,
My lips shall praise You.
4 Thus I will bless You while I live;
I will elift up my hands in Your name.
5 My soul shall be satisfied as with 1marrow and 2fatness,
And my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips.
6 When fI remember You on my bed,
I meditate on You in the night watches.
7 Because You have been my help,
Therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.
8 My soul follows close behind You;
Your right hand upholds me.
9 But those who seek my life, to destroy it,
Shall go into the lower parts of the earth.
10 They shall 3fall by the sword;
They shall be 4a portion for jackals.
11 But the king shall rejoice in God;
gEveryone who swears by Him shall glory;
But the mouth of those who speak lies shall be stopped.
Oppressed by the Wicked But Rejoicing in the Lord
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.
1 Hear my voice, O God, in my 1meditation;
Preserve my life from fear of the enemy.
2 Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked,
From the rebellion of the workers of iniquity,
3 Who sharpen their tongue like a sword,
aAnd bend their bows to shoot their arrows—bitter words,
4 That they may shoot in secret at the blameless;
Suddenly they shoot at him and do not fear.
5 They encourage themselves in an evil matter;
They talk of laying snares secretly;
bThey say, “Who will see them?”
“We have perfected a shrewd scheme.”
Both the inward thought and the heart of man are deep.
7 But God shall shoot at them with an arrow;
Suddenly they shall be wounded.
8 So He will make them stumble over their own tongue;
cAll who see them shall flee away.
And shall ddeclare the work of God;
For they shall wisely consider His doing.
10 eThe righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and trust in Him.
And all the upright in heart shall glory.
Praise to God for His Salvation and Providence
To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. A Song.
1 Praise is awaiting You, O God, in Zion;
And to You the 1vow shall be performed.
aTo You all flesh will come.
3 Iniquities prevail against me;
As for our transgressions,
You will bprovide atonement for them.
4 cBlessed is the man You dchoose,
And cause to approach You,
That he may dwell in Your courts.
eWe shall be satisfied with the goodness of Your house,
Of Your holy temple.
5 By awesome deeds in righteousness You will answer us,
O God of our salvation,
You who are the confidence of all the ends of the earth,
And of the far-off seas;
6 Who established the mountains by His strength,
fBeing clothed with power;
7 gYou who still the noise of the seas,
The noise of their waves,
hAnd the tumult of the peoples.
8 They also who dwell in the farthest parts are afraid of Your signs;
You make the outgoings of the morning and evening 2rejoice.
9 You 3visit the earth and iwater it,
You greatly enrich it;
jThe river of God is full of water;
You provide their grain,
For so You have prepared it.
10 You water its ridges abundantly,
You settle its furrows;
You make it soft with showers,
You bless its growth.
11 You crown the year with Your goodness,
And Your paths drip with abundance.
12 They drop on the pastures of the wilderness,
And the little hills rejoice on every side.
13 The pastures are clothed with flocks;
kThe valleys also are covered with grain;
They shout for joy, they also sing.
